Am I mad?

I know the answer is going to be NO, even if you say yes, I probably still do it anyway[;)]

For a long time I thought about buying an old 911 as a toy, but a) never felt confident enough to do it, and b) thought it would be a pain having a third car i.e. if I wanted to nip out in it it would mean moving cars around or I'd have to park it up at the in-laws etc.

Situation now is that I am thinking of getting rid of the company car ( 1 year old E class Merc). If I do then the plan would be to trade my wife's merc for a new/1yr old high up range people carry to act as troop carrier/weekend/holiday mobile, and for me to fulfill my dream of a 911 for going to the office (7miles) and fun jaunts when I fancy it.

I don't really want to spend more than about 12-15k on the 911 so it's going to be an older one. I could wait a year or two and double the spend for a newer one but I've waited too long already!

The E is a fantastic car but it does everything for you - it senses how hard you press the brake pedal, maps it to how fast you hit it and decides how much to brake. It won't let you rev beyond 4000 if you're stationary etc etc. But, it's an effrotless, refined armchair ride to work on a cold morning, and can be fun if pushed.

I've read lots of 'can I use a 911 as my daily car' threads and they are generally positive, but can I? Should I keep the E and buy a cheap 911 (<7k) as a play thing or should I go for it and use a nice new well spec'd troop carry for the kids at weekend, and use a 911 3.2 Carrera as my daily midweek fix?

I have seen an ad for what appears to be a nice 3.2 Carrera Sport Coupe 88F below ave miles, recent clutch for ~£12k but it suggests there is minor body problems on the bumpers & bottom edges of the wings (a potential huge problem from what I've read here). On the up side, the ad says enthusiat owned, plenty of papers and new clutch!

Any advice appreciated, even though you've heard it a million times before.

Thanks in advance.

Go see the car have a test drive It may not be the car you want but you can get a feel how thay drive have a good look round the car then if it looks ok please get it checked out by someone that knows 3.2 and there faults, The car sounds cheap.
Then think can I live with this type of car putting a smile on my face each time I drive it each day ![:D]

Get "A" 911, or any Porsche

The smile on your face after every drive, will counteract any feelings of guilt you may have of getting rid of all of the current fleet (bus services are very good, I hear![:D])

just to emphasise to what Graham has already said, is make sure you get a specialist to look over it for you. I very nearly bought a "lovely" guards red 3.2 which had been converted (very badly from LHD) At the time i was gutted that the car I had set my heart on was a lame duck, but I waited and eventually found a minter for the same ££££
