Not a new topic and perhaps boring for some longer term owners.

Yesterday I came back from 700miles of driving from London to Dusseldorf on both limited and unlimited roads. This was my first time out of the country with the 997.

My top noted speed was 246km/h (approx. 150mph) although typically I was travelling at 190-210 km/h (approx 125mph) (on the unrestricted roads only of course).

The amazed bit, for me, is that in the 700 miles, which included 2hrs in literal stop start traffic, my overall average consumption was 25.9mpg! For a 3.8 litre car at guzzling speed, I think that is pretty good.

I have to agree they are amazing cars.

Unfortunately my experience of German autobahns is that they are too often two lanes of stop start motoring. On a drive up from Switzerland to the north of Germany last year the sat nav's ETA was going up by about 15 min every 30. It wasn't until about 9:00pm that the road started to clear; by 10:00 I was able to put my foot down but by then it was dark and my nerve gave out at 200 kph.

at peak holiday times this is true[]very crowded and hot.

however at other times they are a joy ,and personally i averaged 130mph for 2-3 hrs on deristricted roads in the 996.great fun[:D]

I have always been pretty amazed with the fuel consumption on my C2. Albeit that it does only have the 3.6 litre engine I averaged a very respectable 34 mpg on a recent 1200 mile blast to Scotland. As I only do around 8000 miles per year perhaps it is a little unfair that our Road Tax is so high when surely this is equivalent to me doing average mileage in a normal family runabout.

Good point. I will do about 7000 in the first year of owning my 997S at an average of 26 or so. My 320d will do 22000 at 45 so will use a lot more fuel. But I will have to pay far higher VED on the 997.

One might suggest that the tax should be loaded onto the fuel but, of course, that is done as well as VED!

Surprised at some of the aforementioned fuel consumptions. Best I have had is 28 on a 900 mile trip but probably never went above 90, mostly 80 or so cruising.

Went from London to Cheltenham for the weekend. I drove there, ave 28MPG. M25/M40/A40 so a mixture of driving speeds and styles. The wife drove back and she averaged 32MPG - same route. Wife and toddler in the car and boot full of pushchair, overnight bag etc.

We only get about 35MPG out of my Audi A4 Avant 2.0tdi 170ps. So on a longer journey from a fuel consumption perspective as long as we drive sensibly the 911 is about the same as diesel is about 10% more expensive. The issue is that I don't always want to drive the 911 in a controlled and sensible fashion [:D] From a depreciation perspective, the 911 is taking a hit right now no matter what the mileage!

For those that have read my comparison and ownership write up you will know I'm a little disappointed with my usual mpg [:(]

However on Saturday I took a steady drive up the M1 to Derby to meet a group going out for a blatt... average mpg was 28.5mpg [:)] so I seem to of fixed the car.. however the usual 35minute trip did take me just under an hour..!!!![]

On the blatt on some amazing roads out towards East Mids and Lincs I got the expected mpg [;)]

I'm hoping to get some excellent mpg's on the run down through France next month [8D]

I always get my best fuel economy on long runs using cruise control 30mpg plus, 32 plus if stick to under 70.

Round town its awful and fuel econmy while playing is around 22mpg, sometimes a lot less. The powerkit does seem to make the car genreally more thirsty, lifetime average so far is around 25mpg.

Still with the Gendarm's being so strict on speeding I think the trip through France next month will be cruise control on and go for economy. That'll make up for the Autobahns[8|]

Although I got 34mph on my blast to Scotland my average since getting the car is 29mph over 12000 miles. I have not had to put any oil in the car yet and it still reads full. Perhaps I am not driving the car as hard as I should?

34mpg! I have never had over 27mpg on a sustainable run basis. I am sure you are driving the car properly, but perhaps not PROPERLY! [:D]
