Ambience lighting...?

I noticed this (finally reading the PCM instructions!) as a selection while setting the a/c on the key. All i can see is a tiny little LED near the rearview mirror and a couple of holes in the doors behind the door handle but no lights. No matter what percent I set the lighting level to it doesn't make a difference and I still don't see any lights in the door handles. Was this an extra or have my door lights disappeared into the depths of the doors? Just wondering.....any thoughts anyone? Also anyone able to explain the point of them? Thanks!

On my car the one in the door illuminates VERY dimly, the ignition key slot.
I can't remember what the one near the mirror does.

Mine is a 986 though

The one near or in the mirror base is the oreintation light which is supposed to make you less likely to be travel sick and give you a slight glow over the dashboard of your car... sceince and all that.. [&:]

I have a couple of small lights at the front of the curved part of the door handle that that 'slightly' illuminate the door handles.

Agree with garyw, I had an older boxster (without LED lighting) and got a 987 model recently. Noticed the pretty white LED lighting after a while - obviously only when I drove it in the dark, which isn't often!. If you can't see it, it's likely not there.

Hope this helps.

so can you see the bulbs in the door holes or do they shine through the holes, set back a bit? the wife was very amused at watching me cupping a door handle with my face against it......

The lights in the door handles are right inside them. I always found that the light in the drivers door was useless and only on a really dark night was the light visible (just). The passenger door was reasonably visible.

I have to admit that I like the general ambient light given by the rear view mirror, never realised it was a scientific development, thought it was just a nice touch.

On my 986 they are amber colour and the mirror one is bright enough to notice in the dark. The ones on the door handles can also be seen when its very dark but otherwise you would not know they were there. If you look directly at any of them though you should see them if they are working. Then you can go to the osteopath and get your neck straightened out!

The 996 are amber, 997 are now white, I assume the same went for the 986 and 987
In the wifes VW they are red...[&:]

It took me a while to work out what they were, I initially thought that it was moonlight pooling over the inside of the car, then realised that it was still there when it was dark and cloudy so I hunted around until I found it! It is a very subtle white, moonlighty (obviously!) type light.... very classy, coming from just by the interior mirror.
