An observation on smileys ...

Chaps,

Having been kicking around here for ... ooohhh, I'd say even longer than that, I find myself looking at the smiles available for use when writing posts. These seem to be a set of 14 to choose from, and I'm not quite sure what they all mean. Does anyone have any light they can shed?

[:)] - Cheeky/happy, perhaps?
[:D] - Laughing.
[;)] - Cheeky wink.

[8D] - Dunno. "I'm being an idiot", perhaps? Much like this one: [&:]

[:'(] - Slightly grumpy. [] - Very grumpy. [] - Shocked. [:(] - Crying. [X(] - Crying even more. [&o] - Crestfallen perhaps?

[:-] - Picking nose?

And as for this one: [>:] - I haven't the foggiest notion. 'Eyebrows like a geometry exercise', maybe?

Does the selection of smileys reflect upon the likely emotions of an average 944 owner? Is owning a 944 likely to make you grumpy / very grumpy / shocked / cry / cry even more / crestfallen more often than to be happy or laugh? Do 944 owners often pick their noses? Do we have angular eyebrows almost as frequently as we are idiots? Do other PCGB forums get a different set of smileys? (Is there a nice selection of hair-curling-tongs ones to choose from in the Boxster forum? Or some serious track day ones in the 968 and Cayman forums?)

All explanations welcomed ...

Oli.

P.S. Yes, before anyone points it out I know there are an extended set of smileys available. But you need to click to get to see them, and my mouse is feeling a bit weary today. Maybe I'll explore those once he has had a nice portion of cambazola and a bit of a snooze ...

I do most of my browsing on my iPhone and have avatars and smileys switched off to speed up loading so I have even less of an idea what they mean!

Oli - I'm totally with you on this, plus I wouldn't mind a few more options as well - beating with hammer springs to mind.....ohh....and eating popcorn one too :ROFLMAO: (lol)

[sm=kiss.gif].....poking tongue?......blowing kiss?

[:'(].....bad taste?

.....raised eyes?........drunk?

:p....same as [8D] but in the winter?

My interpretations:

[:)] Smile, used to indicate I'm answering your question without being patronising. In fact very patronising, see dictionary under "Brett"

[:D] Laughing, usually more at myself unless what you've posted was exceptionally amusing.

[8D] Cool, I want one of those. Not used ironically.

[;)] Knowing wink, the way we communicate between long-term members of the forum when noobs ask silly questions or try to sell their blinged 944 Testarossa lookalike to us. Innit.

[&:] Oops, I was slightly wrong there but I'm glad you corrected me. Now I know better, usually related to 951/952 model designations.

[] Angry. Commonly used whenever I attempt to repair anything. Or people try to sell their blinged 944 Testarossa lookalike to us. Innit.

[:(] Crying. Also used whenever I try to repair anything but more from the financial point of view than the "hits thumb with hammer" one.

[:'(] Oh, that's awful. Really nasty, never seen a 944 like that before. Revolting, should be scrapped, travesty, waste of a good car. See blinged 944 comments above.

[>:] No idea. Genuinely, no idea at all. Possibly refers to wiper failure?

[] I feel your pain. I really do.

[X(] I feel sick? Looks as if it's swallowed a loo roll.

[:-] Pokes tongue out. Private smiley used between turbo and S2 owners.

[8|] An idea has occurred, that made me think, I think I'm right but would appreciate confirmation.

[&o] I'm not happy, life's getting me down, need support and a group hug.

[sm=kiss.gif] I love you. Always used ironically. Honestly. Ahem, I'll stop now....

:ROFLMAO: Laughing really hard, only used once per year to emphasise just how funny I found this.

 Rolls eyes in despair. I don't use this much in posts as I do it so much in real life.

All the above should be read with your own smileys inserted. [;)]

I was just about to add that one to this thread. It's my favourite smiley though I also like some of the rennlist ones:

http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/graemlins/burnout.gif
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/graemlins/roflmao.gif
http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/graemlins/soapbox.gif

Cant get them to copy properly but in order I see them as 'thinking about driving fast' 'roll on the floor laughing' 'soapbox rant' 'super excited' < I use that last one a lot.

Nick,

You'll spot that such a smiley doesn't exist.

I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions.

Oli.

P.S. What do you mean, "I'm hiding, I can't see any smileys at all?"

This is the Smiley for i just reversed my 944 racecar into a solid unmoveable object[] or maybe[:(] or maybe[&o]
(i really did today, damaged it doing a parking manouvre gutted..... i just set fire to 400 quid for not checking my mirrors thoroughly)

I feel for you smiley! [&o]

Did the same thing in my van. The week it came back from a massive repair involving a new rear end, all panels and trim, I reversed it into a terminally slow automatic gate at a customer's house. At least i know, every time I look at the dent in the rear door, it's a bit of Des O'Connor's paint in there. [:D][:D]

Flip me guys! Last time I ever let you drive my S2(-of-awesome-power-and-performance)!

(OK, so it would be the first time as well, but if you can't be trusted to drive something big and slow like a van - or a turbo - then perhaps I shouldn't even be parking near you at events in the future ... )

Get you McNulters, you name-dropper you...[8|][:D]

And just think, there might well now be a joke floating around "The other day my gardener reversed into my gate......." Do you think Paul could claim royalties.

Obviously, to do such a thing in the first place you must be a bit of a [sm=spanner1.gif] :ROFLMAO:

If you look at the little 'mystery' smiley you may find he is just hanging his head in shame [>:] This is a very popular smiley on some Ford forums I believe [:D]
