And I thought I had got away with it....

I use the 911 every day and when I got home from work last I decided it was time to get the hard top on for the winter, especially in view of the heavy rain forecast for the remainder of the week.

I had parked the car to one side in the garage, then moved it to a more central position about 30 mins later so I could get the hard top off the wall mount. It was then that I noticed the dreaded oil drips on the floor. It had only been there 30mins and there where quite a few drops already - dead centre and roughly where the engine meets the gear box. I expect it will be the RMS or IMS or both.

It's done 32000 miles.

I am now waiting to see what the quote is like from the OPC together with a service and brake fluid changed. Oh and probably full clutch replacement too!

Gulp !!

Peter,

I had exactly the same symptoms on my MY 2002, C2, also with 32K miles. I had PCT in Coventry (Nick) replace the RMS, the IMS bearing, seal and carrier. They did an excellent job. I'd highly recommend them.

I agree with Martin. Unless you have a Porsche warranty (in which case it is covered) then an indy is the obvious route. It will be so much cheaper.

Just had a 'reasonable' quote from and Indie, so now just waiting to see if the OPC is competitive. Hopefully the quote will be emailed to me tomorrow morning.

Just a couple of Q's for those who may know:

1. The Indie says that to do the IMS seal involves an engine strip down. Is this correct?
2. Does the engine need to come out or just the gearbox to do either seal?

Thanks in advance chaps.

The Intermediate Shaft seal only takes a few minutes to change once the flywheel is off the engine. The seal is located just below the RMS. There is no stripping of the engine involved. It should only add a few quid to the job, and even if it isn't leaking would be a good preventative measure.

They only need to remove the gearbox to change the RMS, IMS and clutch.

It looks like it could be a Bleak Christmas in the PB house hold![:(]

It may be time to break open those ships biscuits and the Bully Beef[:D][:D]

P.S. You are more than welcome to come down South and join us for some Christmas Gruel! [;)]

Thanks for the offer John - but I reckon we can find the odd tin of Spam and some oven chips somewhere [;)]

Peter,
We know how to cope with hard times up north-at least you've still got a kettle.[:D][:D]

Cheers,

Colin.

Chin up Peter - it could be worse! Although a new engine always helps your score in the concourse competion [;)]

Thanks Rob - but no more R18 concours for me thank you!!

Bolton OPC have come up trumps on the pricing and the car will be going in next Thursday.

If it is the RMS then I am more than happy to leave it with them as Paul Carroll [technician] will be looking after Rutty. He always takes care of my car as if it is his own, so I know its in safe hands.

Paul looks after mine too, give him my regards. Going to Bolton will give you a 2 year warranty on the work as well so if it goes again you won't have to pay!
