And take a deep breath and slowly release....

So, after her mis-firing episode in March (see post in Mid March) I thought I'd let her know who's boss and haven't driven her since. [:D]

Having had what I thought was an epiphany as to what the mis-fire problem was I thought I'd take her for a spin, but she thought different. []

She turned over, started instantaneously, that'll be the new plugs etc and was ticking over nicely - then she died. So, I restarted her and she fired first time and then after 5 seconds or so she died again. Strange, I thought. So again re-started and she died again after 5 seconds or so. Repeat to fade. And yes she has a half a tank [8D].

If I let her lie long enough, she would re-start and last for approx 10-20 seconds, but as soon as I pressed the accelerator she died!

So I'm now more than a little bemused, is it fuel or is it something else? If its the fuel pump, surely it uses up the fuel and it wouldn't re-start.

I spoke to GT 1 in Chertsey last week to find the cost of them doing the belts and fixing a few minor things and now I can't get her there!! BTW, I was very impressed with them, especially their honesty.

Its so ironic really, she has only done 60k, and passed the MOT with no referrals in Feb, so I decided to change plugs, air filter and HT leads and she does this to me.

As Nick said a week or so back, these come to try us!!!!

Thoughts anyone

Join the RAC or AA and get the chap out to your car. That's what I did when I couldn't track down an intermittent starting issue. The chap from the RAC diagnosed it in a matter of minutes.

Plug leads on the right way? Could you have knocked a hose off so un-metered air getting in to the manifold? or the AFM/throttle plug?

Air filter in wrong so blocking air flow some how?

Start with the basics.

Mik_ok - its the standard fuel filter. A new one installed 4 years or approx 9k ago.

Scott - I have RAC cover but its not homestart as I didn't think I'd need it w/ 3 cars![]

Tom - I have checked most things, at least twice, but it could be air starvation I suppose! I'll check the AFM again.

Can't agree more. Is it getting air in?

Is it getting fuel in?

Is it continuing to spark?

CHECK everything - assume nothing. So check for pressure on the fuel rail. Check there is a spark by pulling a plug out. Check the air flow by removing everything up to the AFM.

If you do all this and can't find the problem then ... well, do something else!

Oli.

Dist.cap, rotor arm, fuel filter and DME relay for starters. I had exactly the same problem with my 944 last year.

I had the same issues,i found out that the throttle position sensor had failed(just under the throttle body).Disconnect it and see if that helps.if it does then test/clean and setup or renew then setup.

944 man - It starts perfectly, not lumpy, or mis-firing , just gently dies. However since its only running for 10 secs or so, or longer if I leave 10 mins between each restart, is it really fuel stavation? If it is why would there be more fuel available to allow it to restart?

Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to check if the fuel pump is working properly this weekend, but have a day off on Friday so will check it then, along with the pressure in the rail. Just a quick question, if I have a fault with the DME, AFM etc will it inhibit my ability to check the operation of the fuel pump.

(DME is a new one, but swapped it with another the previous one which I thought was the cause of the previous mis-firing and still the same issue)

I took the AFM apart the other week and checked the voltages etc as per the Clarks guidelines and that seemed perfect, and I suppose because of the low mileage the tracks were virtually non-existant. The one thing which is nagging me now though, is did I put it together properly afterwards, however all I did was take the black cover off and then reseal it.

I cant help any further, mine died after running poorly. Now my 924S has started to play up in exactly the same manner, so I'll be taking my own advice.

Thanks anyway. I'm just going to have to be methodical, and not rule out anything.

Germanmetal - thanks this was something else I am going to check on Friday.
