I have just spent an interesting day helicoiling a stripped thread on one of the bolts around the hippo seal housing. Had slight smokeyness with oil dripping onto the exhaust so I checked the housing the other day only to find a bolt missing. Took out another to gauge length, found one in my spare bolt selection but the new bolt wouldn't pull up tight. Sir, or madam who ever you are who worked on my engine and stripped the bolt, you are an absolute ANIMAL with no finesse. Ooooh I feel so much better for that. Unfortunately it has still not resolved the oil leak to my satisfaction. Any ideas where it could be coming from anyone?
 
Well I can answer my own question. The leak was from the hippo seal, and I was just being impatient. It is all nice and oil free now,
 
Where the line boring tool exits the back of the cam carrier, there is an aluminium cover to blank it off. When you remove the cover and look at it face on it loks like a hippo, simple as that, and it really does look like one because even my non petrol head wife said it did. I was non the wiser until I visited RSJ SPortscars to arrange a visit there for R19.
 
You learn something new everyday.. In my defence I have an S2 so no separate cam carrier and apparently no hippos :-(
 
And I thought it was to stop hippos getting in and causing mechanical mayhem.

Having had one engine wrecked as a result of a spider crawling in during an over-winter lay-up and dieing in an oil gallery, I can imagine the damage a hippo could do.

If I were doing the same again (over-winter lay-up) I would fit a spider seal over the end of the exhaust... but is there anywhere else they should be fitted?
 
Really? Never heard of that before. How did you know this is what happened? Found the remains of the spider, I guess. Where did he get in? Up the length of the exhaust, but how did he get into an oil gallery from there? And an exhaust is a long way for a spider to crawl ...

Remnants of what I believe to be a spider on a previous dead engine... In that case believed to have been supplied with the oil. I worked in an engine test facility and saw all sorts. In my case, I never stripped it down, so suposition in truth, but knew the engine really well, and it died suddenly after the winter lay-up (not a Porsche btw)... a long story that the spider theory fitted...

Anyway... the only route to an oil gallery that I can think of is... in through the exhaust... pick a cylinder in which overlap means both inlet and exhaust valves are open. Go back into the inlet manifold, right back to the aircleaner, then down through the oil breather pipe and into the sump. From there, the engine is your oyster.

A tortuous route... it must take a highly trained spider with an intimate knowledge of the internal combustion engine to complete such a mission, but if successful, it is, apparently, devastatingly effective.
