Annoying buzzing sound from front window or dash area

I was wondering if anyone can diagnose this for me....was going to Wellington Park today and my C2s developed an annoying buzzing sound, its like a bee but much louder and it starts at around 75mph and gets louder the faster you go, to the extent of around 90 you cannot hear the radio. It seems to be coming from around the dash area front window lower..never had this before.

Have recently fitted a new GT3 front bumper

Front windscreen seal, perhaps? Check to see if the outer seal is loose. It is a common problem on early 996s, but a cheap and easy fix.

I will check that all around tomorrow...i was wondering if the change in the front bumper was filtering some air flow up through the car and making something vibrate?

Hi Steve. I'm definitely no aeronautical engineer but changing your front P.U. will almost certainly alter the way air flows over your car. This could have resulted in your windscreen wipers being slightly lifted off the windscreen at higher speeds. The "buzzing" could literally be the blade vibrating at a very high rate against the glass and the noise is giving the impression of coming from the 'dash.

Take the car out again and see if you can see this happening. But do me a favour, get someone else to either drive or look at the blades!!![;)]

If you want to confirm this (or not) just operate the wipers when you hear the noise. It should stop - at least until they settle back to where they rest!!!

Not the same car, I know - but see here (at 5min 20secs) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENb2IDuIyQE

Hope this helps.

Adrian.

Thanks Adrian

well i trawl lots of forums for info on different things and hobbies, but i have never had an answer like yours...you are spot on...the video link was superb and thats the exact sound i am getting, so tomorrow i will go and test the theory....i can remember watching that episode of Top Gear..way before i bought my Porsche and thinking Gzzz all that money for that Ferrari and that bloody noise would drive me nuts....and low and behold i have it and it drives me nuts..problem will be trying to fix it now

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve. I hope that you do get to the bottom of it!

Out of interest I had a look at the Euro Car Parts web site and there is a difference between the wiper blade replacements for a 996 and the "spoiler upgrade" ones. This might be because they have slightly different aerodynamics....?

Now that could be the solution to my problem, thanks again Adrian i will give them a buzz tomorrow......been considering joining the Porsche Club for a while and looks like i am getting closer to joining with help like this.

Cheers

Steve
