I have an annoying knock which sounds as though its coming from the front end i do have a pit so have already looked around for anything obvious but nothing found so i,m thinking it may be the lower arms of the front suspension although nothing showed up in recent mot so whats the best way to check them and if the ball joint has gone in the arm can they be replaced or arm exchanged
Thanks Bob

I had the same problem and replaced both lower control arms, this corrected the problem, got them from Hartech , very good service, you have to send old control areas back for refurbishment,
Once arms off drivers side ball joint very loose, help this helps

As well as the track control arms check:

1. Bushes that hold the t-shaped drop link into the TCA's
2. The t-shaped drop link hasn't rusted through and broken at 6 o'clock with the threaded portion at 12:00 or the bush within the t-shaped drop link
3. The ARB hangers and bushes within in them

I will go under the car tomorrow and have another look for more obvious things if not jack her up and see if i can see any play in the joint or elsewhere can you buy a ball joint repair kit saw a guy on utube repairing one didnt look to difficult anyone done the same
Just seen a kit that design911 do anyone used there kits

I have used the kits from Vertex (USA) which use a brass cup style busing on top vs the standard plastic one - it is a fairly easy job. Try to retain your original circlips for the bottom of the ball joint - the new ones supplied are a dual wound split ring affair that seem pretty delicate for this job.
I would also check the top strut bearings as these will also produce a thumping if the rubber is torn/soft.

The "dual wound split ring affair" is for clamping the rubber boot onto the wishbone.

I've got to add my thoughts based on what I've heard over the years.

I don't know if the rebuild kits are hard to fit unless you're a real expert mechanic, or if the original wishbone is sometimes worn too far for them, but there are a lot of reports of them failing.

Given the labour to remove and refit I'd just go to Hartech and get a guaranteed refurbed part myself. All respect to those who are skilled enough to DIY it, but I'm not sure this is an economical (or safe) home job?

Spoke to Porsche Silverstone and they said the same replace with 968 version i intended to try and mark as much as i can since i have just had the geometry set up
