Annoying rattle/creak

I know this is like asking how long is a piece of string... but here goes.

I have noticed a rattle/creak from what sounds to be behind the dash/under the windscreen.
It has been noticeable for ages but not having used the car for 3-4 weeks, it seems louder - maybe just imagining it.

I've checked visually and thumped everything I can see and also removed the plastic trims under the bonnet just in case - but it is still there [:(]

It sounds like a bag of spanners behind the dash whenever I go over rough ground - potholes, speed humps, etc. (Even tried slowing down but no difference!)
There is no noise if I bounce the car when stationary or turn the steering wheel so I suspect that it relates to something flexing like a bracket or support rather than something just dangling and obvious.

Has anyone experienced anything previously that I could look for and I mean ANYTHING before I go out of my mind.
If it helps, its a 2000 C4 Cabrio.

I'm looking for any options before I bite the bullet and turn this into a major stripdown job in order to cure.

Happy rattling.
Cheers
Dave.

Nothing worse than a rattle you can't find...

All I can suggest is to let someone drive it with you in the passenger seat so you can have a good listen to see exactly where its coming from... have you tried it roof down?

Ive got a slight rattle in my 996 turbo that appears to be coming from behind the centre heating vents above the radio. An Indy has had a look and advised short on starting to dismantle the dash would be best left alone. When I close the vent its not so noticable?
