Annoying Rattle Discovered!

Hi Folks

Just wanted to post this in case it's a 996-related common issue. For some time now I've had an annoying rattle that seems to start immediately, although quietly in the background as soon as I start the car and, when driving, becomes so insistently annoying that I've told the boss - if I can't find this and get rid - the car has to go! Like any rattle or squeak though, it has had startlingly ventriloquistic tendencies! You think you've found it, then realise it's coming from the opposite end of the car!

Well just by chance, I've managed to identify it - it's the door card on the driver's door. If I put pressure on the door panel (anywhere) while driving along with the rattle loudly in evidence - VOILA - gone. It's my first 996, so not sure whether this is a "feature"....

If there is a step by step somewhere that helps me take off the door card, find the offending 'bit' that causes the rattle and fix it, I'd appreciate hearing from someone who can point me in the direction of that set of instructions.

Just thought I'd mention this in case someone else has the problem too.

Cheers
Chris

I had this on my 996. Eventually took off the door card and it turned out to be one of the four screws holding the door speaker on had come loose. There are instructions on removing the door card on Renntech.org. It isn't as hard as you would expect and only takes a few minutes once you know where the relevant screws and clips are located.

Hope this helps.

By the way, im a Kenward the same as yourself!

Hi Greg

Heh - feels weird writing back to someone called Greg Kenward. My brother Greg left this world in 1994. Please don't tell me your middle name is Charles!! ;)

Thanks for the response re the door card. That noise could well be the sound of a loose speaker screw. I'm on it! I'll let you know how it goes.

Pictures of your 996?

Cheers

There's a good DIY here: http://911uk.com/viewtopic.php?t=50427

It is often one of the screws holding the airbag unit which causes a rattle there.

Hi Chris.

Sorry to hear about your brother. I'm a Gregory John rather than a Gregory Charles though!

As requested here's a pic of my 996.

Greg

Many thanks for the link. I can't log into 911 because I can't read the flippin' image they present for spam control. Is there any way to pick it off there and repost here?

Cheers
Chris
