Annoying Whistle

[] I'm new to 911 SC and, I have to say, I love it! Sadly, my new love affair has started whistling at me. Whenever the ignition is turned on there is a high pitched whistle (quite quiet); when the engine is started the whistle becomes incredibly loud; it sounds as though it is coming from the air box. On removing the air filter the sound becomes excrutiating - in both pitch and volume. However, if an electrical load is placed on the car (radio/fan switched on) the pitch of the whistle/screech changes.

Does anyone have any ideas/solutions?

It could be the bearing in the blower fan/alternator. One way of attempting a diagnosis for this is to sray a jet of WD40 (using the long plastic tube which comes with the spray can) into the bearing area when the engines running. If your whistle disappears then that's probably the problem. Sadly this is not a fix, just a way of helping identify the problem. Fixing it is a pain in the ar5e, requiring the removal of the blower fan/alternator housing.

Of course it could always be something else..

[:(] Tried the bearings approach - no joy. I've done some more digging around with the 'screech' - decided it's too loud to be a whistle - comes from the back left of the engine bay, but most noise comes out of the air box. When I accelerate, the noise goes, but as soon as I lift off the screech returns.

Anyone got any other suggetsions I can try?

My lovely '83 SC Targa is pleading.......................

Didn't you mention also that this occurs with the igniton on, but the engine off? Fuel accumulator? I am grasping at straws now but the location is just about correct.
