Annual service - advice required

Hi All,

I need some help everyone. Appreciate your thoughts on the below

Q1:

Is this the correct checklist for an annual oil service for the 944 S2? My understanding is that this is basically the "6k service" as per the service book.

"¢ Check all Lights, levels, washers and wiper blades
"¢ Check all electrical devices
"¢ Lubricate locks and hinges
"¢ Change oil and filter
"¢ Check underside of vehicle for fluid leaks and rubbing
"¢ Check radiator vents for debris and remove
"¢ Check all brake and fuel lines, Tectyl all metal ones
"¢ Check drive shafts and CV boots
"¢ Check all suspension and steering joints
"¢ Check all tyres and do pressures
"¢ Test drive

Q2:

I have noticed the car intermittently (after I have driven the car for over 30mins) fails to idle as per usual when I have stopped (for 15 mins or so to go shopping etc) and then gone to restart the car. The car starts, it idles at about 200-300 rpm"¦.and then after a few seconds it kicks up to the normal smooth idle of approximately 900-1000 rpm. Its probably done this 4-5 times over the last 3 weeks (and it's the same thing each time..rough low idle) so any advice on what the problem is would be appreciated. After it hits the normal idle....the car drives fine....the car also starts and idles as per normal from cold....so the problem only seems to occur after the car is warm

Q3:

Is their any winter prep I should get done at this service? I was thinking to get the sills waxoiled to protect against rust etc"¦and even though I don't plan to run the car if the weather is beastly over winter "¦.I would still like to drive it as much as possible.

All assistance much appreciated

Rgds,

Q2 could be your idle stabilisation valve sticking a bit - don't know how accessible it is on a 16V. Might be worth removing & cleaning (carb cleaner?)

Hi Andrew,

If you are intending to do the service yourself, some years ago I produced a 'Service Schedule Record' (as an Excel document) based on the 12,000 mile which I also sent to quite a few of the forum/Titanic members. If you would like a copy please email direct.

Although my S2 did very few miles each year, I always carried out the full 12,000 mile service and obviously kept detailed records of all work carried out and bills for everything. The service document that I produced allows one to tick every job, with comments, cost of parts, etc.

as to Q3, yes I would treat the inner cills. I would use Dinitrol or Bilt Hamber rather than Waxoil. You can access the inner cills from the black plastic vent in the door pillar - have a good look in there with a torch to see if the inner cills are already rusting from the inside out.

Yes the idle control/stabilisation valve would be my forst port of call for the irregular running you describe Andrew and a bit of a dinatrol/waxoyl to the cills is certainly a worthwhile investment of time and a little money.
