another backbox needed = bad luck or dansk

jasonp

New member

hiya,,,
i had a scraping sound coming from exhaust,,
took it down to the my chaps who put her on the ramp and informed me that " another back box is needed as its come apart inside again! and shows when warm" so i contacted design911 who i then had to e mail and they will contact Dansk and get the ok to send another exhaust out,,,,,
Bearing in mind when i bought the car the exhaust was nearly new and i had that replaced a few weeks ago and it would seem the same thing as happened again[],,
Bad luck chaps or dodgy run of production from Dansk??...
any opinions appreciated,,,,,jasonp

I know Dansk had a run where they didn't fit properly and they vibrated on the heat shields all the time. Quality might not be as good?

Thanks Paul and hope your enjoying your move,,,
wondered that as 911design went straight to contacting dansk on Monday to allow the release of a replacement ?,,,
very helpful at design911 but maybe are experiencing this on a regular basis?,,
Chaps had mine in the air and was easy to track the noise once the throttle was pressed that it had broken up on the inside of the backbox and worse once warm,,,,
I thought the heat shield was the cause but alas not,,,,, jasonp

just an update,,,
i have to fill in a returns form and then post it back to Design 911 who then contact Dansk for a decision,,Not the easiest or quickest of procedures,,,
Hopefully a new one will be sent out and the old/new one dumped but Dansk could insist to see the original exhaust which would mean buying another and the faulty one collected for Dansk to inspect and then my money back,,,,,,
Called OPC yesterday for a price on an OG backbox and was quoted incl vat = £950 [a tad over]......
This should have a good outcome as i was told to put as much info as poss on the returns form to ensure a good chance of a new backbox being sent out,,,,,jasonp

I have no hesitation in saying the Dansk has some quality issues(!), Jason and very surprised Design 911 is still trying to sell these, as they are very obviously not up to the job. Don’t buy another one... insist that they replace it. Can go into more detail if you PM me...

Paul

Thanks Paul,,,,
another failure and i will request my money back,,,
I will inform Dansk on the returns e mail of this thread i opened,,more info the better for transparency,,
very frustrating even more now that design have moved from near me to up the 127,,,
kind regards,,,jasonp

Hi Jason, my thought is that it is the supplier who has the responsibility for the item. Quite a few years ago admittedly, I had a dansk exhaust box go tits up on a 3.2 I had at the time .Northway just replaced it without question. No idea how they got on with Dansk, but I didn't get involved. The only question asked and checked was had I clouted it, which I hadn't.

Hiya Graham,,,
It would seem design are passing it over to Dansk and seeming like a middle man,,,
In all honesty i could kick myself for buying online,,
lesson learned,,,
Thamks for the input Graham,,
I hope to post next with it resolved,,,,jasonp

Hi jasonp

i hope all gets resolved soon.

if it were me and I could get my money back, I would be choosing a nice appropriate backbox and have a shop bend , weld and make up the piping with the bracket. It woukd be cheaper and you would have a tip that you may like far more than a copy of the standard.

i personally did this myself maybe 8 years ago when I noticed where the top meets the box it had rust forming so I decided to bite the bullet. I found a very nice sports back box custom made from America in stainless steel chrome Look and I bought the stainless pipe and bent cut and welded it up to match the original and used the brackets off the original too. All worked out great and end result transformed the car in looks and performance with a far superior sound when on WOT but a lovely sports merma on idle not load at all.

all be it I understand I did this myself and cost me well under half of what your paying but, there's a decent garage up here that my brother once got a full exhuast made up for his golf in stainless all pipes macanically bent to the same spec brackets ect minus the back box for £240 inc vat and it's still perfect and that was 3 years ago.

just an option thought I'd share my experience on it.

all the best
daniel

Back in the day when Dansk were only available from ECP you would have had a replacement or refund in 24 hours!

Dansk now have about 5 direct suppliers and sometimes they have different ideas about what happens with a warranty claim. The 996 rear box fiasco is one example.

The Dansk backbox & pipe I bought from ECP last year for my 924S cost me £142 inc VAT-recently priced 1 for my Wife's 924S at ECP -now £149 inc VAT -still very economic

just a quick update,,
i still have not received the replacement back box and its well over a fortnight,,,
Graham Kenward at Design 911 has been very helpful and assured me it will get sorted asap since he found that the usual chap who he deals with at dansk re warrent issues is on holiday so someome else is sorting it out in Germany and hopefully should have it sent out this week or early next i imagine,,,,,
Last time i by an exhaust part online and if the same problem occurs again then its straight back to design and my money back to buy an og backbox if any other brand is unacceptable......jasonp

Bullsh*t.
That’s EXACTLY what I was fobbed off with from them - it took a month before anything happened.
There’s no reason, in my opinion, that you should have to wait on a third party to ‘decide’ (!) if the product is faulty - it obviously is.
Jason, demand your money back now.

Thanks pse,,,,
when i do get the replacement and should it fail again [ chaps from 996 register informed me that this highly likely to happen] then its straight to Design 911 and my money back,,,,
So could kick myself for buying it on-line but should have the replacement next week,,,,,
At the moment its better that i wait and contact remains online or by phone as my temper is very short and having my intelligence insulted would cause me to go straight to red and a simple situation could very quickly get out of hand and wont end good for me,,,,
Live and learn and a lesson never to buy exhausts on-line,,,,,
kind regards,,jasonp

I have said this before in here...

But, I really do not understand why of the Dansk systems I have fitted for the last 15 years, none have failed... That is 924S, 944Lux, 944S2, 944Auto, 944 Turbo (all need different parts), probably over a hundred cars, and never have any of them failed.

But during this time, I have defended the Dansk products on here and other forums and explained how I have not known any to fail.

I had put it down that I used to buy my Dansk products not through the UK distributors, but direct from an overseas distributor or direct from Dansk... But more recently I had to buy one from the UK Distributor, and expected it to visibly look cheaper and nasty somehow, but to be honest, it looked just like the ones I have installed for years.

The only thing I can now think of, is that I will not replace the back box if the engine mounts or gearbox mounts are in poor condition.. The Dansk items are lighter weight and thinner gauge than the original items (half the reason I like them) so potentially not as torsionally strong.. Where the back box is tied to the body of the car, but the front is tied to the engine-torqueTube-Trans, which if the mounts are soft, will cause a twisting on the exhaust, with the weakest part being prone to failure.

Other than that, I am at a complete loss as to why so many people on the forums have problems with Dansk exhausts.

Thanks jon..
so am i,,never had a problem with my former s2 but this would be the third backbox,,,,
When i bought the car,,the backbox was almost new ,,
so two failures and you can hear the parts bouncing about in the backbox,
should it occur again then i have the choice of an original or a company like Torque exhaust to make me one up,,,jasonp

hiya,,,
hopefully puts this thread to bed or not?
As i got the call from Design 911 this morning to say a new exhaust will be send to my chaps at Top Gear for tommorow or thursday at the latest and the faulty exhaust to be chucked,,,,
so will have another nice and shiny exhaust in and running by the weekend,,,,,,s2
