Another Battery Problem!!

Boxster 987, 2.7l. 2007. Having not used the car for about 6 weeks the battery is dead as a dodo. Funny thing is... it's been on a CTEK trickle charger all the time! I've tested the ctek & it's working fine. I noticed the other day that it was trickling ok to the Boxster.
Now, having put the big battery charger on it for an hour or so, the battery still doesn't turn the engine, although I charge it up to about 13.3volts.

Looks like the battery is knackered do you think?? Or does it just need a good long charge?

Phil.

Hmmm - having done some deeper research on the Forum history it looks like the battery has expired. Funny thing with the CTEK connected though. Maybe a bad connection?? Or a fuse gone.

same happened to me , trickle charger on Boxster/ Battery died, 3 years old/ trickle charger on my Harley/Battery died at 4 years.. sound like a dead cell(AA chap) new battery can be sub £100.00 at Quickfit type of shop or £250 at OPC! as u have a 987 it just drops in , NO codes needed for radio...

Don't forget that if the car is under Porsche warranty you will have to buy a Porsche battery or the warranty may be voidable. Sad but true!

A chap on Pistonheads has just had the battery go on his Spyder at less than 3 years old, the one on my previous 996 let go at around the 6 year mark and I replaced it with a Varta for a fraction of the price of the Porsche battery.

Just back from Solihull OPC - yup dead cell. Had to get a low-loader ride as even his booster pack wouldn't start it. £199 fitted all in. Expensive yes, but I didn't want to jeopardise £1500 worth of extended warranty. Interestingly Sutton Coldfield OPC quoted £171.80 for the battery..... but plus £115.20 for fitting!! Don't tell Solihull!!

The breakdown man had recently done a similar job with a McLaren... only their battery was £1000... makes Porsche look cheap!!

Solihull are excellent. When my battery failed at 3 years they got the cost of the replacement and fitting (£199) back on the warranty!

I have to say I have never had anything but great service from them. With my last Boxster at 4 years a coil spring required replacement (broken) apparently this is classed as a " wear and tear" item and so not covered by the extended warranty. I suggested otherwise , they took it up with Porsche and the result was that the warranty paid for part and fitting.

A great outfit to my mind.

£171 for a battery and £115 fitting, wonder how they justify those charges for such a rubbish battery and a 5 minute job to change.
