Another Bilstein B6 conversion...

Here is my own interpretation. Not as good as the other one on here!

I've gone for the factory look with a CNC turned threaded insert and electrophoretic black coating which gives the original matt black look and like plating it also gets to the inside.

Looks good, are you willing to do another conversion sometime in the future???

The other thread that talked about providing an exchange service has gone quiet.

Dave is still doing the exchange units for his, just give him a nudge [;)]

Funny you should post this as I've just finished building and fitting a set of Bilstein B6 based coilovers:

I plan on doing a full write up soon, but this involved sourcing bits from here, there and everywhere! And lots of scribbles... I'm yet to drive the car in anger as I'm still working on the setup and a few niggles elsewhere. However the car is running at the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power this weekend so that should be a good test and hopefully I'll keep it out of the scenery!

Looks good! There are several ways to skin a cat...

I'm not able to offer as a service but would be happy to provide details to a DIYer. The hard part is removing the top mount... you basically have to make a special tool by welding a socket to a bit of bar.

Yes... significant cost saving and the likelihood that the Boge struts have sat on a shelf for 10 years.

Also Bilstein B6 struts are highly rated but not got the car back together yet so can't comment...

Are there any insurance implications of using what are effectively home-made suspension components?

Oli.

No. As long as they're built properly and the only time I could see this would present an issue is if they failed and lead to a collision and a claim. Even then you (or whoever build them) would have to be proven negligent, probably through the courts. However I can't recommend that anyone does this unless they know what they're doing, or you have a professional do the job for you. In my case I'm an engineer and I wouldn't fit something to my car I'm not 100% confident in; my car gets driven hard so everything is kept in tip top condition.

To answer the questions on Boge struts: unless you drive your car gently (i.e. Not like a sports car) then I would strongly advise against these and you're much better off spending the extra on some proper dampers. The Boge's are very soft and don't last five minutes in my experience. A 944 deserves better!

Agree on Boge and Sachs dampers.

They're averagely good pure road dampers. Nothing wrong with them but the only vaguely 'sporty' thing that they bring to the party is the fact they're black.

On a boggo road car - yep, fill your boots. On anything that will be used in a chuck-it-in-and-hope-it-grips kind of way you'll be bitterly disappointed.

Id understood the question to mean why not use new Boge dampers as a base. The reason would be two-fold: i] cost ii] fitment: youre still going to have to adapt them to a series two car.
