Another new S2 owner

Last weekend I picked up my 1991 bridge spoiler 944 S2 and I wanted to just say hi and fill you in on how it all came to this.

I was bought a CarLimits driving day last year and decided that what better car to do it in than my own (!) so took my BMW 330i . On the day I was immensely impressed, so much so that I booked myself on a track day at Bedford where again the car performed brilliantly, with one exception. Brakes. After five laps I had to come in and while they weren't on fire, they weren't exactly fade free. So I decided that reather than hammer my daily driver I would look out for something to supplement it with something that was fun for weekends and that could go on the track and dice with the best of them. I had had MX-5s before, and although I love them I thought something else would be more interesting. With rear wheel drive being essential and depreciation proof (relatively) being desirable I started to look around. Then, when I attended the Britcar 24hr and saw some 968s hammering around I had a plan, so phoned to see what the insurance was on a 944 as a second car, and when it wasn't stratospheric I decided that it was the one for me. I'd always liked the look of the S2s and I went to see a few to get a feel for the market and the overall condition of cars available.

I'm pleased to tell you that I now have a lovely Panther Black 1991 S2 with grey logo cloth and what I think is half leather, although looking at it I'm not so sure? According to the option codes it has sport seats. Were these standard for UK models does anybody know? Either way I am very much enjoying it and it's the perfect contrast to the 330i. The previous owner had got the belts done but had done very few miles on the last 18 months. Thankfully the car feels much better in the 500 miles I have done in the week since buying it, but right now it's with Camtune to be serviced (only been 5k miles since the last one but thought it sensible) and have the sticking handbrake fixed. Hopefully they'll confirm that it is a nice solid example tomorrow and all will be good for another outing to Bedford on the 16th February. If not, I'll let you know.

Meanwhile as soon as I can I'll post up some pictures.

Welcome to the forum James

I hope you'll enjoy it on the track [:D] look after the brakes though - I think Bedford is quite hard on brakes, so you may also get some fade in an S2. The standard pads are pretty good for the occasional track day, but if you're going to be doing it regularly, then harder pads is a good idea. (oh, and maybe get the brake fluid changed whle it's at Camtune)

These cars like to be used, & will be much better for regular use.

Sports seats weren't standard for S2's so if you have them that's a bonus!. They have much larger side bolsters, so quite easy to tell. The covering is likely to be leatherette, rather than leather.

Hi James, welcome to the forum and good choice of car [:)]

I tracked my S2 for a number of years and always had great fun. You shouldn't have any brake problems if your fluid is changed every year and you make sure you have plenty of disk and pad and that the callipers are in good condition with freely moving pads.

Sports seats were not standard on S2 but you can check which options you have by recording the codes on the sticker in the spare wheel well (or first page of you service book) and entering them in this website:

Thanks guys, option codes now confirmed for sports seats as 383 and 387, no mention of leather so let's assume leatherette.

Camtune have come back to me and as suspected there are no real horror stories so they are doing a service, sorting an cam cover oil leak, fitting a 2nd hand undertray (missing for some reason) and reapiring the handbrake, so looking forward to getting it back later this week.

Of course it was never going to be that simple and the NSF lower ball joint is looking a little terminal. Has anybody got any positive experiences of the ball joint repair kits available, as I would like to at least investigate this option before commiting to a whole new lower arm at ÂŁ350 plus fitting in a few months time?

Mind you if you're doing one, then you might as well do the other, and if they're off you might as well fit new dampers at the front. And well, if you're doing the front you should do the back and ooops I've just mentally spent ÂŁ1500....

I think that's nearer ÂŁ2,000 [:D] (After all, you might as well fit KW V3's while you're at it....)

Ball joint options are either - exchange refurbed arm from Hartech or replacement balljoint from Rennbay http://www.rennbay.com/

I think that there have been positive experiences with both - I'm sure you'll get some more opinions shortly.....

If you lower the car, there are some + points for the rennbay geometry correction setup, particularly for track use.

I like your train of thought - you'll fit in nicely here :ROFLMAO:

I have heard no horror stories of the refurbished wishbones from Hartech at ÂŁ150 exchange. Barry Hart is a true 944 guru and has invested a lot of time and engineering knowledge into his solution. He posts on a few Porsche forums and encourages people to call him to chat about it if they have any concerns.

He normally has them in stock and will post out for next day delivery

As promised guys here's some pictures of my new (to me at least) 944 S2. Just had a succesful morning fitting a new stereo so treated it to a wash in the afternoon sunshine. It's a bridge spoiler model with 148k miles but still looking very fresh. The refurbed wheels help, unlike the Pirelli P6000s that surround them [;)].

I've edited your first post so that the pics are shown properly (and as a consequence will confuse everyone else reading the subsequent posts [:D])

Shiney and black - what more could you want [:)]

Hello and welcome. Lovely looking car.

From my experience with S2's, they do work much better for being driven. Daily, for preference. Hard, if that is possible where you live ...

Hope you have as much fun with yours as I do with mine. You'll find that the engine is a disappointment (no-one buys a 944 for the engine, no matter what model), but the chassis, steering feel, balance and composure are simply fantastic. (I say this having just watched a 106GTi - a car known for handling well - back off quite suddenly while negotiating a particular series of curves on the way to work. My viewpoint was my rear view mirror, and he was getting quite small quite fast ... [:D] )
