Hi guys, I've been dipping in and out of the forum for a while now as I've been thinking about buying a 996 as a weekend fun car and for occasional track day use . I have a budget of about £35k and I'm planning to buy an early C2 or maybe a C4 if I can find one within my budget. However I'm getting cold feet about the whole thing thanks to the number of threads on this forum about what seem to be major endemic faults with the 996. The trouble is that, for the budget I have, I'm going to be buying a vehicle outside the OPC network, probably from an independent dealer and that means a limited warranty. So, a few questions
1. The biggest thing that worries me is an engine failure which does'nt seem to be uncommon. A typical used car warranty is not going to cover anywhere near the £10k required for a new engine. So how common is engine failure and should I be worried? Whilst we're on the subject how commom are RMS failures?
2. Why do 911's in general seem to have had so many owners? I'm looking at '98 -00 cars which have had 3, 4, 5 owners or more. Is this typical and should I be worried by cars with large numbers of owners?
3. What options are considered desirable? PSM? Larger wheels?
4. What colours are best for resale and which should I avoid? I dont want silver or black
5. Can anyone recommend an independent dealer from whom to buy?
I had set my heart on a 911 but I'm starting to think I should buy something more sensible like a M3 or something more reliable like a TVR[] Somebody reassure me!
