Another (odd) tyre question - Pse advise

OK, I know that there are loads of tyre questions on here but I have recently bought a 944 T and it is fitted with virtually brand new tyres (or at least unworn when I bought the car) but they are a very odd combination. Fronts are Avon ZZ3 225 50ZR 16 92W and the Rears are Kumho Ecsta Super 245 45 ZR 16 94W.

What do we all think? Any one get any experience of these tyres at all? If not the odd combination. I think that I know the answer but I am very loath to spend a fortune on new tyres (even at Costco prices), particularly as i may not be able to keep the car for too long. I have done a couple of track days on them & intend to do a few more.

Thanks.

The sizes are spot on for the standard 944T wheels so no worries there.

One of the old Titanic regulars reported funny handling when he first fitted a pair of Avon ZZ tyres but left the other axle as A.N.other brand. Once he changed that to Avons as well he was happy again. Personally I like Kumho tyres but I have not tried that particular 'Super' variant. Apart from that I think its all down to personal choice, if you feel the car handles well then, just enjoy it.

I agree you should be OK too. I'm a big big believer in the axel set rule i.e. as long as you have the same brand of tyre with approx. the same depth of tread and similar condition on each axel then it doesn't matter if you've got a different brand on the other axel. I always change tyres, wheel bearings, shock-absorbers, bushes etc. as axel pairs.

I bought a cheap set of tyres for my road wheels which are 17" 235 & 255's and put on those Ecsta Supers. I absolutely hate them to be honest and will take them off when I can. To be sure this is after driving a lot on the R spec Toyos so to be fair they will never grip anything like it, but they break traction very easily and almost had me into a wall when I put a bit of power on through a turn. Snap release. If you don't give it some then I guess they could be drivable but not on my watch.

Does that mean that I can blame the Kumhos on the rear for the spin I had at Cadwell Park a few weeks ago? I thought that it was a combination of a cold and greasy track and my poor reactions!
