Another one of those oil questions!

I bought my 944 S2 in late April with approximately 85.5k miles on it. I have since covered about 2k miles and I got the 'Engine oil' light on when I started it on Saturday night. When I checked it on Sunday the level was above the bottom marker on the dipstick, but not by much. Therefore, since I have absolutely no idea what oil is in there at the moment I went and bought some 10w40 Magnatec to top it up. This has cured the 'Engine oil' light issue. However, a number of questions spring to mind:
  1. Is it alright to mix oils? What would be the consequences of mixing oils? I think that given I don't know what is already in there, perhaps I should do a full oil-change myself, then I would be topping up with the same type/grade as is already in there.
  2. Given that it seems to be burning/losing oil at the rate of 0.5l/1000miles is it really worth putting fully synthetic oil in?
  3. Is this rate of loss of oil unusually high (I notice that the handbook talks of oil consumption of up to 1.5l/100km)?
  4. Given that this is my daily driver and tends to get used for relatively short journeys (i.e about 9 miles in each direct to and from work) what spec oil should I be using?
  5. If I am burning oil, rather than leaking it (I don't think I have seen oil on the drive, but then normally when I am at home my car is over that patch!) is there anything that I can do about that?
Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Andrew

You've got me worried now. At 150k mine has only used 1 litre over the last 12,000 miles using 5w40 fully synthetic.[8|]
