Another Porsche-ism...

So, its that time when after almost 12m of ownership and my official porsche warranty expiring I have decided to renew with another Porsche one and subsequently booked it in to my OPC to 'do the do'. They said they had noticed last time I was in that I had Pirelli N3 Assimetrico's on the front and Pirelli N4 P Zero Rosso's on the rear. How observant they were. When I replaced the rears I couldn't at the time get hold of any N3's so opted for the next best thing and went for the N4's. As I was retaining the same N rating on independent axles I thought there wouldn't be an issue but should have known better...

OPC - 'To extend the warranty on your car sir ALL the tyres MUST have the same N rating'
Me - 'Does that mean my current warranty is void then as I have different N rated tyres on the front and rears?'
OPC - 'NO'
Me - Confused
OPC - 'The car needs to be as it left the factory sir'
Me - 'So, I could borrow some tyres off a mate to make sure all the tyres are the same N rating, pop it down to you and the car would be re-warrantied?'
OPC - 'Yes sir'
Me - 'And when I leave the garage and then put the non-matching tyres on it doesn't void my warranty'
OPC - That's correct sir'

Am I losing the will to live or can this really be right....!?

Which OPC?

I would suggest "there is also a different level of fuel in it compared to when it left the factory and a couple of extra stone chips, I'm not buying two tyres just to get a warranty, now do you want to sell me the warranty or shall I drive to the next town to buy it?"

The person you spoke to is ignorant.

By the book, your current warranty is voidable - and will continue to be as long as the tyres you have on are non N-rated.
That goes for any other part on your car that is not Porsche approved, or fitted by a non-OPC technician.

However, it is the case that one technician will care, another will not. One OPC will care, another will not.
So it's up to you to take that gamble.

The car is in OPC now and when it went in I had a small list of stuff that needed looking at, and whilst still under the existing warranty it would be rude not to see what I can get fixed for free...

- PCM playing up. The orange 'bar' that selects the option you need on occasion decides to scroll up and down the option list [rapidly] without you turning the selector wheel. It's very annoying as you can see it in the corner of your eye moving around and if you actually need to use the sat nav you have to wait till it calms down (sometimes it doesn't!).

- Near side mirror not dipping when Reverse selected

- drivers door and bonnet not catching on first attempt to shut

With regards the PCM I took a video of the orange bar moving around on its own steam while I was sat in some traffic the other day. The video was 4 seconds long (!) and boy was that the best 4 seconds of video I have ever taken...I showed the technician when I dropped it off and after they'd had the car most of the day came back with the following -

'well sir, the video is conclusive evidence there is an issue with the PCM and if you hadn't the video it would be a different story as we couldn't replicate the problem'...

... so they have confirmed they are replacing the whole unit at almost £3k cost - oh, and the other items above are warranty-able too!

There is a god - thank you, I forgive you for always moaning...

Is that something that should happen on all 996's?

Yep memory seats only and if I recall the car needs to be in reverse gear when the setting is stored with the seat memory button for this to register
