Another potential purchase

Still looking for a 944 turbo 250 bhp car.

Found another car at a reputable dealer. Its been sitting for some time. Its a 1987 car finished in Zermatt silver with red leather interior.
Its registered as RAZ 8944 at the moment.
Its done 250 000 miles, but the dealer who is an expert on these things tells me that the engine is a replacement. He will also make the car track worthy, reconditioning the whole car.

So my questions:

1) Anyone know this car? It has a PCGB sticker in it
2) What do i need to be weary of on a 250 000 mile car that has been standing for a while?
3) Can a 1987 car officially be a 250bhp car?

If it's an '87 car, it's not a 250
It may have an engine from a 250 car - has it got the running gear? (brakes/hubs, suspension, gearbox etc..) - any links for us?

"Reconditioning the whole car" sounds like a big job - what's that include?

maybe it's a 250(k) car? [;)]

You could 'upgrade' the 220 with the turbo and ecu from a later car. This was quite a popular upgrade at the time.

- or you could just up the boost a bit and claim it's a 250? - after all, we know it's fairly easy to make 250 bhp from a 220 car.

Rav,
Mine is on 225K and really you wouldn't know. It means it will be on the second/third/fourth ratio of clutches, starts. alternators, suspension but as long as it has been used then all should be well.
Mine hadn't done very much for 2 or 3 years before I had it and I have replaced quite alot but then I bought it for a very reasonable sum. It isn't quite there yet but I do use it every day.
I suppose the bores would be the main cause for potential concern because of the mileage - timely oil changes will have been vital to keep then nice and round.
Hopefully the dealer will be able to show you evidence this is ok.
Otherwise all that has actually done 250K since new are the cogs on the speedo.

Thanks for the responses.
The car has had a newer engine, so might be 250 bhp now. It has the M030 brakes and suspension etc.

The garage selling the car are JMG in Christchurch.

JMG in Christchurch.

Never dealt with them but as far as I can gather from posts on here you are unlikely to go ever wrong with anything you will buy from them.

His website lists a very high mileage silver car with red interior but states it's an '88

This would make much more sense are you sure you're not mistaken about it being an '87

If I was going to buy a 250k "bitsa" car from a dealer, JMG would be one of a very few I would even contemplate...I'd suggest you won't find anyone else who knows more about these cars

Thanks for all your help.

Diver944 - Thats the car. The website tells me 1988 but looking at teh DVLA website it gives this information:

The vehicle details for RAZ 8944 are:
Date of Liability 18 11 2008 Date of First Registration 26 01 1987 Year of Manufacture 1987 Cylinder Capacity (cc) 2479CC CO2 Emissions Not Available Fuel Type Petrol Export Marker Not Applicable Vehicle Status Unlicensed Vehicle Colour SILVER Vehicle Type Approval null This vehicle can be licensed at a DVLA Local Office without the V5C Registration Certificate The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry. Vehicle Excise Duty Rate for vehicle 6 Months Rate £101.75 12 Months Rate £185.00
So the car was first registered in January 1987 - making it likely to be a 1986 (C plate) car?

Would really strongly recommend that you save a bit more money i.e. another £1000 to £1500 and get a lower mileage(i.e. 100'ish k) and 'sorted out car' as you could quite easily spend that amount on a car that has an incomplete history (i.e. on new belts, 48k service and a few bits and pieces). i.e. Steve Johnson's new advert

Gordon - thanks for the advice. Gordon has a e-mail already ! Im one step ahead of you and very excited !!!
