Another vibration story......

A month or so back, I was becoming increasingly aware of a vibration through the car which you could feel through the pedals and various other parts and the increased trim rattle. The belts were due for re tensioning, so I had this done(the balance belt was a bit loose) and the heat shield adjusted. It was identified that the engine mounts, particularly the driver's side, were excessively worn, so I subsequently have had those changed at a cost of £500.

The majority of the vibrations had now been cured, but I was still aware of a resonant rattle, especially when holding the revs around 16-1800 rpm in neutral which would induce a noise something like a loose ehaust. I could also feel a high frequency vibration through the gear stick, increasing with road speed.

Putting the car on the ramp, we quickly identified that the rattle/vibration wasn't in fact anything to do with the exhaust, but is in fact the torque tube. Goes to show how a noise that sounds like it's coming from one place is actually coming from somewher totally different. You can feel the rumble with your hand and it sounds a bit like a cement mixer full of gravel(well not quite that bad but definitely not right []

Ollie at RPM was surprised as he said he hadn't changed one for about 10 years! He has one on the shelf which could reconditioned, but he was going to have to find a place that could do the refurb. Does anyone know a company that does them, preferably in the Bucks/Beds area? Any ideas how much I should be looking at for a reconned unit?

This is not a topic I recall being mentioned on here and if it has, it ceratinly doesn't seem to crop up as known regular problem. The noise/vibration is not that intrusive, it's just that having spent a fortune on the car, I find it an annoying intrusion. I'd guess that a lot of folk would put it down to the 'they all do that' sound of noisy transmission!

I have a squeeky torque tube as well. I'm rebuilding my engine and have a re-conditioned gearbox so I want the torque tube to match! I've read a lot of guides on how to do it. Essentially you pull the old bearing carriers out using some threaded rod, fit new bearings and then push the carriers back in.

If we do find someone to do it perhaps we could do a bit of a bulk order?

I've only heard of torque tube trouble a handful of times over the years, most of that was on Rennlist but I am pretty sure our own Thom had to replace or rebuild his at some point. Hopefully he'll spot this thread and be able to help (or remind me that my memory is pretty crap)
