Another wasted inspection 996 Turbo how hard is it to find an honest one!

Thought we had it in the bag with a nice ( not the colour we wanted Black ) Silver 996 Turbo Cab 2002/3 ish era.

Only to find out ( phew that's to having a PPi ) that second gear pops out all the time. No wonder the seller wasn't keen on having the car PPi'd

That's two 996 Turbo Cabs running around London for sale that are junk and the fund for purchase has taken another hit.

Still better £250 than £2500 for a gearbox rebuild!

So as I had never heard of gear box issues with 996's before is this common!!

I'm starting to think these 996's are fragile heaps of junk!!!!! and there's me selling off early Porsche's to buy newer for a turn key experience. I'm thinking I am better getting a " Cheap Fast Ford " for weekend fun and keeping all the early Porsches and forget the water cooled Porsches never existed!

sad face. [&:]

Hi, In this months Total 911 (issue 110) there is quite a big article on 996 gearbox, might be worth a skim in the newsagent. I have heard of the 2nd gear popout before but have not had the impression it is super common.

Took me two years to find the one I have. And then it had a lot of pre-sale work done to it by the dealer [Specialist Cars of Malton - ask for John Hawkins and mention Ray] who then guaranteed it for a year - from a light bulb upwards. He was as good as his word, too as through my PCGB Region I took the car to a local Indy one Saturday morning with the group. The Indy found a range of other items which needed attention. So it was picked up and trailered back to York, thoroughly worked on and delivered back on a trailer coming back to me in stunning shape. My local OPC said they hadn't seen one as nice; which is nice to hear. I write about it most months in Total911. I put it up for sale recently [knee problems] but got nothing but cheeky dealers calling. So keep looking and do try the above. If you need more detail send me a PM. Best.. Ray

going to get Total 911 later today to have a read. I am understanding that 2nd gear issue is down to

Miss gearing or abuse of some sort.. Being a Turbo this would make sence some one has kicked it's back side once to twice but how many times to damage the gearbox.
This car has been maindealer serviced all it's life Porsche Solihull my home town funny enough.

Its a fault that you have to look for on all turbos, along with coffin arms, stuck actuators, spoiler hydraulics, ac not working, radiator leaks, clutch, plus the usual stuff like accident damage, brakes, inner edges of rear tyres etc etc.

The cars are very robust and more reliable than the standard cars as no engine issues the above are just areas you have to check that the owners have repaired if theyve been unlucky and gone wrong.

Sorry to hear that Mark.
Happy to share the 6 page Hartech report on mine with you if seriously interested.
Check my entry on the Members For sale.
Gearbox is one of the best bits of the driving experience. Slick and quick...or it should be!

Thanks it's the Turbo I am after but I have passed on the details of your one to a friend who is looking to take the plunge on a 996. So any luck he might want to part with cash.

Your right about the tyres. This last one had all 4!!! inner edges gone meaning all 4 of the tyres where not infact good.. but worn out! 2 points collectors and 2 that where not far behind.
I think this one was owned by some one who bought it but never spent a penny on it.. anyway back to the drawing board.. no one said it was going to be easy. [:D]

Hello 912UK, would you care to PM me regarding the silver 996 TT in London with the 2nd gear issues, I beleive we have both wasted our money!

Since I have had a few emails about cars for sale which I have followed up on one thanks. The others have not been Turbo's and cabs. Anyway I have also had an email about a car that some one else has had inspected and lost their money on the inspection ( which is part blessing part frustrating at the same time ) So as it might help others this is the last car to be inspected. It was at the lower end of the scale in terms of price. As before this one inspected a £26,000 one and still a string of problems. But at £20,000 reconciling the price saving and some money spare to do some repairs but not that sort of repairs! if any one else wants the list of items wrong with this car i'm happy to let you know. All fixable but alot of money and also not really listed as it really was in my view. But to some one else it might be just what there looking for. All 4 tyres shot ok can live with that as don't like the wheels anyway. But jumps out of second gear alot on the test drive.

Oh well the hunt goes on....... this is fun ........... NOT! [:D]

Suddenly my 944 ownership is becoming more interesting and fun.

Its a bit hard to work out what you are trying to achieve, there are a couple of decent mileage cars at specialists under 60k for £28/9K, the rest are tips and over 30k.

The car you have below is a private sale for £21.5 and is £5k+ under the market so I would expect there to be some major problems, if its not the engine then its pretty hard to spend that mu, so whats the list?

Hi 912, (don't know your name?) I would be most greatful if you could pass the list on to me by PM or on here please? Was it your own inspection or done by a porsche dealer? Cheers
Midyo

Hi 912, can I take it you don't want to share the information or are you just not on the website lately?
Thanks

I have heard the gearbox 2nd gear pop out does occur with the turbo gearboxes but not sure how common.....

One thing I have done is changed the gearbox oil - this is not due until 96K in the Porsche service schedule, however gives peace of mind if done earlier.....oil was fine in mine hence concludes a healthy gearbox. Lots of particulars in the oil would mean possible syncro damage.
