Well the itchy feet have won out again! Having had 32 cars in 10 years, my 18 months in this has been a comparative lifetime but still I can't help wanting something different. Might try something fat and comfy next, m5 maybe? I'm not sure yet..

Good lord Ben - like a tarts knickers honestly.
Surely you want to get the most out of your time and money from the mods you've done no?
Ah well best of luck.
M5 tourings look quite good value - load carrying and no loss of ooomph.

Your selling Ben - WTF!!!

Having been in your car it's fast, very fast and feels superb - A good proposition for anyone wanting a turbo.

M5 next then.........?????

No soul but few cars walk the line better than an m5 when it comes to something fun to drive, yet enjoyable on a long journey.

The 911 is on the other side of the same line. Less practical for carrying luggage/passengers but better to drive and similarly luxurious on a long trip.

No argument there. An M5 Touring is every car you could ever need and brilliant at it all. So why don't I want one?

I find my wants change over time. I've never wanted an M5 before. I love comfort but the drivers seat is too far removed from the mechanical bits and you don't get enough feedback for me to enjoy it as a drivers car.

In the past if I've wanted something to chew miles drive I've bought something boring and cheap and then had a sports car for the weekends. E.g. Audi A4 2.8 Quattro and TVR Cerbera

Now however I don't really 'need' a car at all, I definitely can't justify two and it would be useful to be able to lug large things like TV's, paintings etc between where I am staying in Plymouth and my home in Northampton. That means a lot of motorway driving and not a lot else. If I'm only going to have one car then a really boring car is just going to get me down. I want something a bit interesting.

An M5 offers a bit of interest in the form of a nice soundtrack, a bit of poke and a chassis good enough to play a bit from time to time but with the comfort and luggage carrying capacity that will make the long drive home a more pleasant experience.

My turbo offers a far superior 'driving' experience but the sharp/hard/responsive controls are a million miles from big saloon relaxing for chewing up miles on the motorway and it's pretty crap for carrying lots of luggage (the only two things I can justify having a car for at the moment). An M5 could and would be a much better fit to what I need right now.

Regards,

Ben

Hear what you are saying Ben. I really want an 02 530d M Sport Tourer for many of the reasons you have stated. Plus I love having a Beemer in my life, have owned more Beemers than any other marque in my ten years on the road. Mate has an M5 - Horiffic MPG, awful, god awful! Horific servicing too and prey it doesn't go wrong. Other than that they are amazing, great value too!! No big deal tho, buy one enjoy it keep it, get bored sell it buy something else.

If you do get one, tune it and lets meet up again for a blast out mate.

Ben,

I have a mate looking to swap his RS4 estate for a 911. I've sent you an email.

Jon, thanks for comments. I'm actually looking ideally at an E39 m5 and they are pretty similar to 996 in terms of fuel consumption. Will definitely do a drink to see your new car though. I'll be needing a turbo thrill before long.

Ewan, email sent. Yes could well be persuaded by that swap.

You can never justify buying a sports car. You can justify buying a large estate car though. If you need an estate then it might as well be an M5, or an RS6. Both divine!

In truth, I have a Peugeot 407 SW which is a good, reliable, comfortable mile munching load lugger but nothing else. That's why I bought the 911 (also because I got bored waiting for me to finish my E-Type).

Regards

I think it must be the new year doing it, I keep going between keeping my 996 and spending more money on her (renewing pretty much everything to have her totally perfect) or selling and putting the money towards something else.

I seem to change my mind daily at the moment.

Whatever you go for best of luck!

Car has gone. Did a deal with a B5 rs4, rare car and a bit tasty. It's rather better than I thought it would be. Comfy but cor blimey is it fast!

Far from a let down after the turbo. Weirdly if anything it feels even faster? That said I'm far from convinced that it's standard. Has an mtm badge and mtm folder in its history file.
