Firstly two questions if I may,

1. Do all 997s with sports chrono come with the sports chrono dial in the top of the dash (if it's got the dial it's got sports chrono)?

2. Is it only the sports seats which have the plastic back (standard seats are leather backed)?

Now for the opinions (another question really)

Other than sports chrono & PSE what options are a must and what are nice to have?

Hi Ben!

1. Yes. It's a total waste of time and is something else to go wrong. The clock on the dash looks bloody awful - try finding one second hand without one! You'll never use it and look like a tool for having it. (Clarkson's words - not mine - and about the only thing he's got right in the last ten years or so!)

2. I'm pretty sure that it's just the sport seats that have the plastic backs. The sports seats are less popular as they're built for the likes of Jude Law rather than Ray Winstone.

Look for PSE, Sat Nav, Bose, CD changer, darker grey or black leather interior, litronics (if it's a C2S it will have these as standard), five spoke 19" carrera wheels are nice and easy to clean - the multi spoke ones are a nightmare to keep clean, colours like black, all the different variants of the greys and dark blues seem to be popular colours - just not yellow - anything but, come to think of it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the quick reply Adrian.

As I mentioned in my other post I'm looking to purchase a 997 C2S Convertible for around the £40k mark.

I am definitely looking for one with grey/silver exterior with black/grey leather interior (I don't like the blue leather (no offence to anyone with blue leather!)) and with sports chrono (although I to thought the extra dial spoils the lines of the dash), PSE and the sports seats as I don't like the way the leather crumples on most leather backed seats (plus I'm only young so I haven't reached the 'Ray Winston' phase of my life yet!).

I also think the tracker would help with the insurance, Bose & sat nav are other must haves. Wheel design isn't that important as I could always change them at a later date. Crested seats would be nice as would the leather dash but not a must.

Yep you get the silly clock. When I bought mine I asked if I could have the chrono function without the clock and was told firmly that I couldn't.

However Sports chrono is a bit of a marmite thing (love it or hate it) apart form the fact almost no one likes the silly dashboard clock.

The chrono function itself is interesting - stuff the time bit but the sports chrono also has the sports button that allows you to sharpen up the throttle response, the engine revs more easily it also backs off PSM's parameters to allow you a bit more freedom before the electronics interfere - having had it for 2 years I like it a lot. It does default the PASM to its harder setting but that is no use for roads just track work so most reset the PASM to normal with the sports mode on. PASM is standards on the CS (2 or 4) but not on the plain C2 (I'd get PASM on a C2 if I could but not everyone is a fan)

C2s or C4S over the stock C2/C4

PSE obviously is a must have (sports exhaust) and I really liked the Adaptive sports seats and regret not having optioned them on my car (I borrowed an OPC car for a long weekend loan it had the adaptive sports seats and I loved them). on long journey's I found them more comfortable than the standard seats and I am built like a fat Arnold Schwarzenegger [:D]. The std seats have leather backs the sports seats have plastic backs.

Short Shift if you can get it - its a fantastic gear change and once you get sued to it the normal gear changes feels sloppy, indefinite and slow - which of course it isn't but thats how good the short shift is. The only two drawbacks are while very light when he oil is warm it can be a bit still in cold weather and also if your not used to such a definite gear box it takes a little while to get into it. along with the sports map on the engine its one of those options that makes the car feel more out and out sports car than a combined GT/Sports car

CD changer again is good, Cruise control is very useful if you do any long motorway schleps (it even gets better fuel economy than i can get with my right foot) and can be a license saver with all these 50mph roadworks piled with average speed cameras.

Finally if you like em sporty and you see one that spec suits otherwise go for an x51 pack (Powerkit) - it includes the PSE and gives the C2s?C4S an extra dose of grunt.

Others have covered the colours. If your planning on keeping it get any colour you like, except yellow of course - other owners will have to shoot you[:)], you'll get wilder colours cheaper and loose more on them.

I like the sports chrono but only because it makes heel and toeing easier as the throttle response is better, the timer on the dash is as useful as chocolate swimming trunks in a heat wave.

adrian-just a point about sport seats -the 986/996 sport seats were,as you say rather narrow!!
the 997/987 are much more suited to the fuller figure[:D]i think porsche realised their customers were getting older and more"comfortable"!!having had both,i would never have 996 sport seats again, but wouldnt be without 997 sport seats

Whilst not an induction kit, I'd suggest that PSE should give you all the roar you need

hey garyw, how loud ? trackday ok ? or not, and is the pse conected to sports button ? ie quiet n loud or just badass mng noon an night? cheers am new 911 owning, so many questions.

The PSE has valves that actuate at different levels, so quite safe for track use.
It does have a shortcut that keeps it in loud if you want that option (brown plug)

Easy to tell who has them fitted, sadly not available for a Turbo though [:(]
