antilock warning light

Can anyone help me with my 1991 S2 which has recently decided to show me the antilock warning light every time i drive off. When i start the car all the system warning lights come on and go off as they should do but once i reach about 10mph the antilock light comes on (along with the master warning light) and stays on although the brakes themselves feel fine. It started doing this about two weeks ago but only came on occasionally but it is now a rather annoying permanent feature on my dashboard!!

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers
Ross

The system does a self-test at 6mph - you can hear a groaning noise when it does it if everything is working. Evidently yours isn't for some reason. Start with cleaning the sensors and checking the wiring, then if that still isn't it it could be the pump (behind the offside front wheelarch liner) or the ECU (in the offside kick panel).

on startup I do not hear the ABS system go through its system check & the warning light is lit in the dash

I have never heard it start up on mine and I dont get a warning light.

What am I listening for?

It's a noise a bit like a small electric motor whirring - much like a coffee grinder if it were running with no beans in it. It's very quiet and sounds like it's coming from behind the dashboard right in the corner of the windscreen.
