Thanks for the replies guys. PMJT i am just a bit worried about the amount of oil it has used, when i first got the car the electronic indicator said the oil was full but after 1000 miles the indicator shows the oil level to half way is that normal???. Also what the best oil for 996 GT2???

Don't worry [:D] I remember being absolutely panicked when my first 996TT started doing the same thing!

Doesn't sound excessive to me - it all depends on how you drive it - the GT2 engine along with the 996TT engine were slated when they first came out for their 'excessive' (in comparison to other marques) oil consumption. I always used to work on the basis of 1ltr to 1,000 miles - with track work / fast road driving then possibly more.

Porsche's response - and I think it's a fair one - is that if you're getting 450bhp from 3.6ltrs then you're gonna burn a bit of oil to preserve the engine [;)]

What colour is she? Clubsport or Comfort? What year? 462 or 486bhp?

They're awsome cars - mine was a 2002 462bhp Clubsport in Speed Yellow - huge fun and it went to a good home who used it as they should be [:)]

Umm - not much to say really - they're very easy cars to live with (until you push them! [;)]) - I owned mine and loved it to bits but missed the 'nimbleness' of the GT3 so went back to a MkII Clubsport.

As for ride height - hehehe - welcome to Porsche [:D] Any good independent or OPC should be able to put the car onto a Biesbarth wheel alignment system and tell you what the set up is - I'm afraid I've always worked on the basis that the factory knew best so left well alone EXCEPT with the GT2 and GT3 - for some reason they all seem to come out of the factory with different suspension settings!!! [&:] It's worth the £400 or so for an alignment check.

Oh and talking of suspension - when you drive at low speeds, you may hear creaking from the front suspension on the lock to lock - don't worry - it's the rose jointed suspension that groans ever so slightly - took me weeks to work that one out!

I was just about to ask about that PMJT i did hear some noise coming from the suspension. Have u ever driven the GT3 and why his the clubsport alot more nimble than the GT2 ???.

There shoudln't be any 'major' noise - just a strange 'grinding' noise - like teeth knashing (sp?) when you move the wheel lock to lock at manouvering speeds - anything more than that, stop the car, open the bonnet and put your hands where the rubber seal on the bottom is and shake the car up and down - if it's making a noise, might want to get the bushes looked at.

Yes, I now own a GT3 MkII Clubsport - my GT2 was a Clubsport as well.

Hmmph - this is not easy to answer - the GT3 has way less power - and I miss the 'bang' of the GT2 when the turbos really kick in - but the narrower track of the GT3, combined with the normally aspirated power delivery curve means that for the driving I do - mostly narrow country lanes where it's all about the precision of the turn in rather than the ooompf you can go at - the GT3 is a more 'nimble' and agile car. It tucks in tighter, the mid corner weight transfer is less agressive - and on mine the anti-roll bars are on full stiff [:D][:D][:D] I would never have dared do that the the GT2.

With the GT3 it's about 'slow'ish in, fast out' - with the GT2 it's more 'slower that the '3' in and bonkers fast out' [:D] [:D]

The GT2's backside can make you think carefully about the turn in - too much aggression, combined with a tiny ammount more power and the back end soon comes round - especially in the wet - the '3' is a lot more progressive - partly due to the power delivery and partly due to the track. You've also got more time and opportunity to correct mid corner with the '3' as the torque is always there (no turbos).

Also the '3' has a bit less weight to move (particularly at the back) - but of course 100 gee gees less.

Don't know if that makes sense [&:] They're very different cars. If I lived 'darn sarf' again - with easy access to Europe and plenty of wide roads, a '2' would be great - but living in the chilly north with narrow, winding lanes and congested trunk roads, the '3' is just more 'chuckable'.

Thanks again PMJT for all your very interesting observations on the differences between GT3 and the GT2. I wud really like to drive a GT3 to compare for myself the different cornering abilitys and power deliveries between the cars. And once again thanks for giving me peace of mind over the oil usage
