Anyone able to personally compare a 3.3 930 with a 3.3 Turbo 2?

Hi guys, first post in this section of the forum but I am thinking of becoming a regular if you catch my drift.

I'm currently looking at 2 cars, one is a Turbo 2 in a colour I don't like much and LHD, the other is an '83 930 in RHD and a colour I do like. Anyone had both models who can give a bit of insight into the differences of owning them?

ive got an '83 930 that ive enjoyed for 7 years, driven a friends '91 turbo which happens to be left hand drive, and is similar but different.... i like the raw 930, the car i saved up for since leaving school! no power steering, so heavy parking but more feel at speed, only 4 speed gearbox, but great fun leaving it in second gear right up to 90mph, not so much fun trying to stop the thing, i seem to remember the 1984 cars had a bigger servo, but still not great at stopping.. 83 was the last year before the heavy electric seats, so should be lighter than the t2 and more nimble. his car is no faster than mine, early cars seem to have less to go wrong, but feel more of an antique now ,depends what you want it for, squirting past slow traffic is fun but wont be easy with left hand drive, but if you want to do trackdays the coil springs and abs of the t2 would be better ,and a nice short gearlever, you can always throw the heavy seats out, and it would be better for european trips, if the cars are a similar price i think a t2 would be easier to adapt to after your 944. i keep thinking i could sell mine and move to a lhd t2 for the same money but too lazy to do it, maybe next year..what does your partner think? my girlfriend wont drive the 930 as the steerings too heavy (17 inch wheels and small momo wheel) but she wont drive my LHD C2 either!!!! oh and the colour-- the paints only put on a car to stop it rusting......

its not like buying a fiesta -- the dealers happy to take you for a test drive, trying to get 2 porsche test drives on your day off isnt easy , and the 2 cars you want to try are often at opposite ends of the country, or sold by the time you get there .....
 
Thanks for the replies chaps. I had already driven the T2 and quite liked it, but I've also had a Carrera 3.0 and a 3.2 Sport over the years so I quite liked the idea of an older one also.

Anyway I have chosen to go with neither, the reasoning being that I found a RHD C4 in a colour I do like (point taken on the purpose of paint, but practically a red T2 would attract a lot of attention even when parked) at a price that will let me bolt on a supercharger for similar money to either Turbo (the 930 would have been cheaper BTW).

I know that doesn't make it a 911 Turbo, but I still have my 944 for track (well, once it has an engine in it again) and the 911 is intended to be for fun on the road and with occasional trips to the 'Ring until I learn it enough I'm prepared to try the 944 there, so s/c power delivery will be ideal. The fact it's a C4 rather than a C2 is mainly just that I found a nice C4 at the right price before I found a nice C2, but I do quite like the idea of 4wd for my intended usage. Perhaps in a year or two when the '44 is running again I'll look for a T2 in RHD as I think that is more the car I'd like.

In terms of my missus, she won't drive any Porsche I buy. I think the only one she ever drove was #2 and this will be #8. She does have a preference for RHD though, which I think is really because in LHD people tend to assume she is driving.

The 930 is a 3.5 with big turbo BTW - so I imagine it's like Pepperami.
 
should end up a quick car narrow body , plenty of grunt and grip. then again could be an expensive project, i wouldnt bolt a blower on an old engine without a top end rebuild and new piston rings , then you will want turbo 2 /or RS brake discs and calipers, to stop it, so you are looking at 10 grand ? i have seen a few supercharged 964s for sale around £20,000 may be easier selling the C4 at a profit and buying one already converted.....
 
I wouldn't go for a top end rebuild unless I thought it was necessary and I intend to use it for a month or two before I commit to the supercharger so I can see if it's a good candidate car or not. If not then I can out it. If it has any oil leak or wear issues that I haven't spotted then I can stick 3.8 barrels and pistons on it and see how I find that wthout it having cost me more than it's worth. The beauty of the supercharger kit is that it's totally reversible so it can be removed to sell the car on or swapped to another car, even a 993. It also has a second hand value as a kit for that reason also.

I'm not sure if the brakes are up to it or not. 9m haven't said they need uprating with the supercharger and at least the C4 has bigger ones than the first C2s so possibly decent fluid and pads is enough. I will probably throw a KW Variant 3 coilover setup on it to sort out the handling.
 
im still kicking myself for not buying a secondhand 964 supercharger kit i saw on pistonheads a few months ago for £2500, it only lasted a couple of days.........
