I saw this on another forum (SEATCupra.net) and have asked for a place. The guy has put a fair bit of effort in after some promising feedback from his feeler but now he's struggling to get the 30 people he needs to make it happen. He is OK for me to open it up on here because he thinks Porsche owners won't be hooligans. I'm sure we're not in the way he's concerned about [8D]. As I say I'm right up for it and I therefore want to see it go ahead - anyone else?
I met Alan Blencowe (currently races in the SEATCUPRA championships for Barwell Motorsport) at SEAT's Prodrive track day in June. I discussed the opportunity of taking the track day further on a group or 1-2-1 basis and he suggested he could organise the following options.
1) Locations
Alan suggested a number of locations that we could try, and I think my searches on Autoroute have pulled back the right ones!
a) Keevil (Airfield) "" Alan's preferred choice for 1st outing, Trowbridge, Wiltshire BA14, off the M4 Southbound towards Salisbury
b) Hullavington (Airfield), Wiltshire, SN14, North of M4 towards Malmesbury
c) Llandow (Circuit) "" Alan's potential choice if we chose to do a 2nd event - Nr Cardiff Airport, South of M4 CF71 postcode
Things to consider about the above 3 choices:
Firstly Alan suggested it may be good to get people on an open airfield (such as option a or b). This would ensure that those participating would have good clear run off without flying off into the rough! Alan said they would construct a wide track out of cones with 2 long straights and then some twisties. Once drivers are competent and comfortable enough with their cars Alan suggested we could do a level 2 Academy day at Llandow. This is a challenging tight twisty track and may be better visited after we've got to grips with the cars in open space.
Ultimately we are free to choose our venue so if the general consensus is track rather than airfield we can go with the majority vote. A two stage airfield then track day does however make good sense. Alan does have access to Thruxton race track, however this would increase the per head price by about £100 each. It is something we could consider if you feel the tracks listed above are inappropriate.
2) Format of the meeting
The format suggested is that there would be 4 or more events ongoing continuously:
1) Setting up your driving position in the car to enable you to drive, react and handle the car effectively
2) Auto tests "" using and making the best of the car and its capabilities (ABS etc"¦)
3) Slalom - track set up with cones so as not to damage your car
4) High speed track driving tuition and analysis of driving from inside / outside the car
5) Launching car from standing starts (for those interested in perfecting ¼ mile times)
These are just provisional ideas, but Alan said he is open to others (within reason if the members want a specific type of training). Assuming a take up of about 30 drivers moving between events, you would have the chance to do an event, and then take a break to let your car cool off and for you to re-gain composure! Supposedly all day events are quite knackering so you'll be grateful for the rests in between, and the chance to socialise, take photos and talk motors!
Please note helmets would be required, so members who have them can bring them. Alan can provide helmets at a limited cost on the day for those who haven't got access to one (about a tenner)
3) Prices
The price per head for a full day event is approximately £125 based on an attendance of 30 people to race. This does not include helmet hire or food. I don't have an exact cost on helmet hire yet. Alan said they could ensure there was access to fast food and drinks all day (we would have to pay the usual food charges and that is all). To race at a well known circuit would add nearly £100 per head, but as I said above is something that could be considered in the future. There will be safety and medical support on site during the day but I would need to clarify the details on this later. Also I understand that Alan won't be handling this all on his own, so there would be another 3+ supporting instructors for the events.
I have discussed prices with Alan on potential one to one sessions for ½ day intensive driver training for the future. Prices will be published on this in due course.
4) Other details
Alan appreciates that the SCN approach to motor sport / driver training is responsible. He re-iterated that as this is a dangerous activity, anyone who oversteps the bounds of acceptable behaviour (putting other people or themselves at risk) would be immediately excluded from the event. It would compromise the likelihood of us getting future events if this was to happen. Therefore I will speak to Alan about getting a code of conduct document together to inform novices like myself that there are strict rules that apply when you partake in this kind of event. I am sure with the targeted audience this will not be an issue, but basically it means that if anyone was to overstep the mark they will have signed paperwork that states they will be ejected from the event for misconduct without any financial reparation. That's the bad stuff over!
You will be able to bring a guest, who can attend for approx. £10. They will not be eligible to drive, but can accompany you on passenger rides during your training.
Alan has chosen the tracks on the basis of good availability, suitability for the events, and as we are bringing our own cars he said it would be better to not use facilities such as Heyford Park as the concrete compound used in the circuit would cause excessive tyre wear over a day.
5) Actions
At present I need to get an idea of exact numbers so Alan can get an appropriate number of instructors (I think 4 may be at the event), and then the price per head can be calculated. We are going to need at least another 10 on top of the list so far (and that's if you're all interested so it may be more), so please feel free to recommend others who you feel are appropriate.
Also if you are interested if you could let me know when would be good / bad for you so I can try and book appropriate dates to cover all of us. Are weekends better or are you happy to take a weekday off?
If you want any more info on Alan please find it here: www.alanblencoweracing.com
I think that the above has pretty much been transposed as Alan dictated over the phone. If any of you have any questions, suggestions or corrections please let me know Warren Cox .
Apologies if I don't reply immediately as I am currently settling into a new job.
Many thanks to Steve Rudd (Ruddmeister) and Mark Phelps (m0rk) for their support with getting the wheels rolling with this one.
If you are interested I need to know your availability ASAP. Time is running out this year, and September will be about the last month we can seriously go ahead . Trying to coordinate dates for 30 people is going to murderous! If we get nowhere near this number the prices may get too high and obvioulsy it wont go ahead
