Anyone get search to work?

I've tried the search facility a few times to find things out and never get any results. I just searched for the term '944' and nothing was found. Either I'm being a numpty or this forum search facility doesn't work!!

Try selecting a forum or "subscribed forums only" - it seems to have a problem if you just give it a search term and don't either limit the forums or the dates or something else..

Good luck!

Forum is set to only display topics from last 30 days, search is set to crash your computer if you search for longer than 90 days. It's a bit like trying to claim for an intermediate shaft failure when you've not paid for a warranty. [:D][:D]

Seriously, if there's anything that you think should be covered, but doesn't show up in a search, let us know. It's probably a candidate for the faqs.

For any thread I know I have been involved in I tend to go my profile, my forums then search through subscribed threads. I find that quite quick [:)]

Still seems very hit and miss if I'm honest, I've searched for things which I know exist but still get no results. Am I missing something obvious still?

No sadly thats a very accurate assessment of the search engine...(certainly more accurate that the engine itself)

Reset the "display posts from" at the top of the 944 homepage as well. It's 30 days by default, so search sometimes limits itself to 30 days. Going back too far can freeze it up, for instance if you search for a very common word like "tyres" over, say, a year it can't cope.

Personally, I know we old-timers do tend to see the same old questions coming up regularly, but lots of people are new here so there's no harm in my mind repeating things. If you want to know something ask away, it might help someone who's too nervous to ask! [:)]

Thanks Paul, will try that, I like to search first to save you going over the same old ground!

Another question, how long to you have to leave between posts? I'm in no hurry but often get a message saying I can't post a consecutive post

I can't check, it's head admin only. It was 2 minutes I think.

The reason is that we had it at one minute, but after a falling out with one of the members a few years ago he set up an automatic spam post to go on overnight. We opened up in the morning to find hundreds of posts, it was a pain to sort out but at least he could only get one a minute through. After that it was raised to five minutes for a while, then back down to two after the dust settled.

At the other extreme I think, it doesn't apply to admins so I'm not sure, you lose a post if you've not finished it after 45 minutes. If you're composing something long and complicated, or have to go off halfway through, draft it in a word processing porogramme and then copy across to the forum! [8|]
