Anyone got withdrawal symptoms...

Looks like the old forum is back and the march of progress has been halted for a while. So, what's new?

Cheers
Mick

^^^^ Jus' wot I fort.

I take it that this is the old forum and not the new forum that happens to look very like the old one, eh?

Yes I had a few withdrawal symptoms....

Couldn't get me daily fix of automotive porn and banter !

Mind you I have insulated the garage, put some comfortable flooring down, fixed an electric hedgetrimmer and actually done some rustproofing on the old gal instead of flicking through internet forums.....

I've been lucky enough not to get withdrawal symptoms as I've been testing the new forum.

A shame it wasn't ready, but the little niggles are better sorted before it goes live as we have the option of this old friend. [:)]

All we need is content for the new website now. Tech articles, stories, events, write-ups of events, pictures for the gallery, get them to me!

what is planned for all the posts on this old forum does anyone know ?

it would be a dreadful waste if some of the more technical threads were not archived for future reference.
if its a question of storage I'd be willing to provide a permanent storage for a backup of the 944 forum posts until such times that we are able to find a way to sort it and host it for reference purposes

Very good Q Peanut. I assume that the 'new forum' is just a new front end, and that the back-end data store hooks up to it in the same way as it hooked up to the 'old forum'. Either that or there is a migration programme planned to bring the stuff over. However it's a question well worth asking as it may be something not thought about.

McNulters, any idea what the answer is?

Rest assured no shortage of people raised that question... hopefully my posting so will save one of those working on it wasting time answering whilst they could be getting on with making it all work!

In theory nothing will be lost: nothing will change, really, as the forum works well and is just being modernised a bit.

That said, even with a simple software update we lost some of the very long threads last time, so that was a glitch no-one could have foreseen. I tihnk there's always the risk of some data being lost as the forum's well over ten years old, and there's been a lot of changes in that time. Some things like pictures or links might not copy across, but in theory you won't even know it's changed other than it being a bit better.

The initial plan was that, even if the old forum content wasn't transferable, it would be archived anyway.

But, this brings me to a point Bruce mailed me about (so consider this my reply [:)]). We have seen time and time again that content on the web gets lost for various reasons: the manuals on Rick's site seem to be gone, and photo-hosting causes issues when people delete their account. The tech article on re-sealing the rear hatch has lost all it's pictures, for example. Imagine if Clark closed his website tomorrow!

I would like to get the new website hosting everything we can, in a way that's permanent. It wouldn't be locked up to members-only: we need to keep this sort of stuff in as many places as possible so it's not lost. Text isn't an issue, but it would require people who have useful pictures sending me a copy, and that way they can be put on the new media library. Of course, there needs to be an open attitude towards sharing pictures, as no-one wants to get bogged down in arguments over copyright when we're talking about a few snaps of an event, or amateur pictures of a technical proceedure. The point is to have them stored safely, for everyone's benefit.

The same with manuals, brochures, old adverts etc. We could store scans, and ensure they are always available to view. Copyright has to be considered here, but most marketing material isn't protected, and things like PET are open to all, so I can't see a problem.

The Club archive has had a lot of attention recently, as it was never really valued. We hold the largest archive of Porsche material outside of the museum, and it's now being recognised as a huge resource. There's no reason the same can't be done with all the 944 material that's spread so widely on the web, to try to bring it together in one place that's not going to disappear.

thank you Paul for your detailed reply. Apologies for causing you such a lot of extra work.
Its good to know that hopefully most of it will survive.

I hadn't thought about the potential problems of all the dead links to various images and articles hosted on various sites.
A big thank you to everyone inolved in providing this excellent resource.

Not at all. The forum hasn't been a huge issue, as we have a version that works perfectly well. The team dealing with modernising every single IT area within the Club to tie in with the website have been the ones doing the work! [:)]

Now we've got somewhere that's as near to permanent as I can see anyone creating, it would be good to get everything backed-up on it. Who'd have thought that Rick would ever stop hosting the manuals, for instance? Crazy that I haven't archived everything before in all honesty.

Crazy that I haven't archived everything before in all honesty.

I've seen several clubs lose their entire forum history because no one thought to archive it.
LCGB recently lost all theirs when their site went down due to a virus. No one had thought to do a daily backup. Such a waste of important historical data and experience lost in a second !

Same happened to a well known Yamaha XS650 forum .
