I bought my 996 a few months back, its a 2001 (y reg) pre face lift model however its got a number of post facelift items on it which were all factory standard including a 3.6 ltr engine. Its got alacanthra headlining, electic boot and bonet switches, electric fuel filler cap, all of which are apparently post facelift items. It isnt an import and the log book has the correct details and it was all verified by porsche uk when i bought it.

Ive seen one car like this advertised but was wondering if anyone else had a 3.6 in a preface lift model??

Sounds like you have quite a rare bird there Luke. I have never heard of a 3.6L in a pre-facefilft car. Is the engine code M96.03 on the stickers in the service book and under the bonnet?

Hi richard

Not sure about the stickers, will have to check tonight when i get home, I know the sticker has got the number which indicates its a uk car though. When you say under the bonnet, do you mean stuck to the underside like of the bonnet, near the front?, what exactly do these numbers indicate/

Yes, that's the one. You should also find it in the service book. It lists the VIN number, Engine number, and all the option codes.

the plot thickens.....i checked the service book last night and the code in it is m96.04 which i assume means a 3.4, i havnt checked the sticker under the bonnet yet but assume it will be the same.

What does this mean?, has the car had a change of engine at some point, although the log book records the car as a 3.6 and the vin/engine numbers match the log book as well.[8|]

M96.04 is definitely the code for a 2001 3.4 litre engine. (See engine codes in the FAQ section).

It could be that your engine has been changed at some point, but it is surprising that it is was changed for a 3.6. The 2002 cars use a different DME (engine control module), although I suppose someone could have fitted the 3.6 short engine and used the ancilliaries from the original 3.4.

I suppost the only way to know for sure is to look at the number on the engine itself. Maybe 3.6L is an error on the log book. Does the engine number start with 661?

might sound like a daft question Richard, but where exactly on the engine is the number, ive searched the forum for this but cant seem to get a difinitive answer?

It is stamped on the crankcase. This is the picture from the workshop manual. Not brilliant, but it might help locate it. I'll be grovelling under my car on Thursday (exhaust), so I'll try and find it and take a picture.

Hmmm... just got me thinking. Has anyone tried fitting a 3.6 aircooled engine from a late 993 to a 996. That would give the best of both worlds, comfort and reliability - just a thought.

well it looks like my car is definitely a 3.4, the engine number confirms this as it starts with 661. I dont have a problem with it being a 3.4 as i found the story about it having a 3.6 strange even though the registration document states its a 3.6.

How is it that the registration document has 3.6 instead of 3.4, the engine number on the document is right, starts with 661 and the vinplate correctly identifies it as a 3.4 so surprised how at the time of registration a mistake could be made?. Does anyone know if its possible to get the registration document changed by dvla?

I think it is possible to get the V5 changed. There are lots of cases where the VIN has been entered incorrectly, so I expect that is what happened in the case of the capacity.

Incorrect entries at time of vehicle registration are almost impossible to change, even the police can't do it.

I have a 944 S2 Coupe which is shown as a Cabriolet in the V5................they won't have it, probably a clerk typing error at the time.

The engine no. is on the engine crankcase around the sump cover.

Porsche parts system (PET) shows your engine code M96/04 was the last type for the 3.4 pre facelift and was used in both C2 and C4 (M620 C4), whereas the earlier engines were 01 for manual and 02 was used on Tiptronic cars - I think......

996 Turbo is M96/70, GT3 is M96/76,

.

Mine is M96.01, and Tiptronic. I think M96.02 was for 1999 C4's (eGas).

Here is the photo of the location of the engine number:
