Anyone know of this car?

Both look nice from the photo's and descriptions however i've spotted something on the 2nd '86 car. The strut top caps are a nipple shape. This could well denote M030 suspension. The non-M030 suspension struts are capped off with a flat mushroom shaped cap whereas the M030 strut tops tend to have the nipple shaped caps.

I wouldn't automatically say £7k is expensive for an '86 car, but it is absolute top whack so you should expect its condition to be as good as you can get with some sought after extras (like M030 for example) and an impeccable service and maintenance history. Also with it having the 16" teledials on it looks like a very late '86 car i.e. '87 spec with the later offsets and ABS. I don't think they did the 16" Teledials in the pre-ABS offset.

Conversly £4,800 sounds a little too reasonable for a '91 car. I may be a little out of touch but I'd expect one of these in tip top condition to be topping £7k and knocking on the door of £8k.

Just to clarify they did do 16" teledials with non ABS offset as mine had them and they are still stuck in my garage. []

I viewed the 4800 one back in Nov last year. Unfortunately it didn't start! So we could only roll it out of the garage and take a look. Its a good looking car, the front arches look as good in real life as in the photos. The interior is all pukka too with no undue wear. The current owner bought it to use for LeMans last year, he's a nice chap, drives a sporty Audi. He called me a few days later having got the car going but I'd already paid a deposit on another, apparently some crud in the fuel lines was the cause. I did like the look of the car alot, its a lovely colour, the sports seats are good and it has the 10 speaker pack. All doors close properly, shut lines look good, no wet patches underneath. However, the history is thin, very thin. Take everything the seller says with a pinch of salt, if there's no paperwork (and there was hardly any) then don't believe it. The car has a boost enhancer installed so I imagine it goes well. The wheel rims are shot and badly chipped probably even beyond repair, I took it from this that the car was driven as it was supposed to be! Other than that, thats all I can say as I couldn't drive it! Oh and there some corrosion creeping through on the sills. Its a sound base car but I'd imagine it would need big money spending on it over time but then the same can be said of any 944!! ;) Hope that helps.

Thanks for the replys.
I like the look of the 86 one,but i still think it is a bit on the expensive side?

£7k is a lot for an '86, but if it's as good as it looks and the history is all there, including up to date belts etc, then it's probably only what you'd spend on getting the other car up to scratch. But, it is a 220 rather than a 250 car....you takes your choice.

Better colour, though! [;)]

If it's top notch as described with good maintenace and solid bodywork then £7k is in the ballpark. There are several people looking for good turbos at the moment but they cant find any at cheap prices. There is a reason for this - good turbos are thin on the ground and are worth more than the average. Unfortunatley it seems that most aren't even average, they are pretty cr4ppy and you simply cannot tell from a photograph so you have to travel around and view them.

£4800 is chancing it with rusty sills, little documentation and it wouldn't start [8|]

I'm biased but the best one for sale at the moment seems to be Davyboys from this forum

I think it really comes down to wether or not you have the time and resources to renovate/restore a dodgy car. Looking at how much I have spent over the years in garages my advice would be to buy nothing other then a puka condition car with bags of history, provenance etc. etc unless you have said time and resources and lots of luck.

Having said that a certain person we know, who lives not a million miles away from me has always bought mega cheap cars, spent every weekend sorting them and then got some really nice porkers.

Personally I like the look of the 18 hundred quid one that was on pistonheads. If its OK and could be sorted by someone over a month or two then that for me is more satisfying then spending 10 grand on a car that in reality is just what we all expected as the average state of a 951 or S2 several years back.
