Anyone know

Does anyone know what the internal differences are between the 996 PSE boxes and the 997 PSE boxes.
Both boxes look to have externally the same dimensions and the same fittings bar a slightly different exit pipe on the 997 items.
My reason for asking this is that I really love the sound of the 996 with PSE whereas the 997 sounds less gutteral so I would like to have the 996 boxes fitted to my 997S.

Trawling the internet has heralded no answers so can anyone help me.......

Taafy, with the 997 PSE disconnect the connector inside the engine-bay - takes two seconds. The exhaust is switchable, loud and soft, and this connector disables the switch and leaves the baffles fully open. It sounds much much better than when it's just in loud mode, which as you've probably noticed still goes quiet between 30 and 40 mph to suit European drive-by regs. You'll be amazed how loud it is, and much louder than any 996 I've heard, so why try and keep the 996 stuff ?

For all of you that have 997 PSE, you need to disconnect it, you're missing a real treat.

Rob,

Are you saying the exhaust sounds different with the switch disconnected or just 'loud' all the time ?

Anyway, I'm with you on this. 997 PSE is bordering on antisocial loud for me so why you would want it any louder is perplexing !

Yves

a) At the moment I do not have PSE fitted to my car, I am enquiring so that I make the right choice.

b) A friend has PSE on his 997S but even before it is in the quiet mode it does not sound like the PSE from the 996.

For me it is not about making it louder , it's about getting that deep barrell chested PSE growl that the 996 has which is no longer evident on the 997 PSE.

Yves - Yes sounds different with the switch disconnected. Tried it on my own car again today, just to make sure, disconnect it and you'll see.

Taaffy, try disconnecting your friends PSE and then listen...

Yves, under the engine cover, right hand side above the motor - there is a brown electrical connector with a retaining spring clip. The block it is connected to has pneumatic control pipes coming out of it. Push the clip in and simply pull the connector off. You can slide the connector back over the block to keep the dirt out, but not re-engage the clip - mines been that way for over 6 months and never moves.

Taafy, I think it may be your imagination re the difference between the 996 and 997 PSE exhaust note. My pals 996 C4S has an unswitchable PSE and compared to my 997 C2S with the switch disconnected, you can't tell any difference?

Is it possible that you are comparing to an aftermarket system such as Tubi as they do generate a slightly different note?

I retrofitted a PSE on my 997 without the switch(loud all the time).I must say that I dont find it antisocially or annoyingly loud-it just adds 'bark' or 'growl' in the lower rev ranges.

Cheers guys .....it is defo a 996 Porsche system ......but if you are all convinced of the 997 system with the switch disengaged then it must sound just fine ......now a trip to the OPC seems imminent.....thanx

My 'hacked' PSE now run-in is very loud indeed - love it!!

Some info on the hack if you read down from here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=188587&mpage=3&key

I *think* X51 cars may have the location of the switch in a different place than normal PSE, maybe down the far left hand side from what I have heard mention.

The hack itself comes in many forms. Some people disconnect the switch, some (like me) disconnect the hose, and others have put in an electronically controlled switch in the cabin itself to turn the PSE on/off with no cut-out.

A hacked PSE is at least 20% louder than PSE activated through the standard in-cabin buttons. Going through a short tunnel in 1st gear with a hacked PSE and the windows open or the roof down (if you have that option) is something very special indeed!!

Due to all your input I will probably go for the 997 PSE and have it installed without the switch ......

Faffing around making 996 boxes fit would have involved a bit of hassle .........thanks to all .......[:D]
