Anyone removed a wing from their 944???

Any hints/ tips any hidden bolts I should know about? I've searched the forum, but no mention of wing removal and nothing on the on-line manuals I can see.
 
Replaced the OSF wing on my old 944, getting to most of the bolts was straightforward but the three at the back (near the door but inside the wing) were a bugger to get to because the ABS pump & a plastic rain duct were in the way. Pretty straightforward apart from that, even aligning it wasn't too bad.
 
I unclipped the ABS hydraulic lines so I could move it somehow and reach the bolts.
On the other side it's fairly easy to get behind the fuel cannister.
 
I agree with Riverside big time ! I chose to the o/s wing off when I had to refurb/ fix the ABS, a total sod to get at the 3 vertical bolts that hold it up against the A-pillar. Even worse was the fact it was the first time ever (quite nice & reassuring tho....) that the wing had ever been off and the bolts were covered in underseal & gunge....

Perserve and be very patient !
 
That underseal that covers the three bolts can be loosened by gently heating it with a hot air gun or hairdryer. With a hot air gun, keep it moving back and forth across the area to avoid setting fire to it [:eek:]
 
Thanks for the tips chaps, just what I was afraid might happen :- 1) there are more bolts at the back of the wing, 2) the ABS unit needs to come out to access them. I have already struggled with the thick layer of sealant.

I'm hoping that removal of ABS unit just involves undoing the big bolt I can see and undoing the brake pipes (which means bleeding again!)


Hot air gun, yes good tip to remove/ soften sealant.
 
The ABS pump doesn't need to come out, it just prevents you seeing what you're doing. Unless you've got forearms like Popeye it will be considerably easier to just reach past it [:D]
 
Thanks for the quick reply, Riverside. Can you remember what size the bolt heads were? (10mm?) and where they were behind the pump (top bottom and middle would be logical. I had a feel behind there, but it was hard to find anything underneath the amount of sealer there is under the wing.
 
You're right on both counts, the bolts are the same size as all the others & they are spaced approximately at the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 heights along the rear edge of the wing, with the heads pointing towards the front of the car. IIRC I used a long extension on a socket for the top two & the bottom one was (eventually) by hand with a ratchet spanner. Try taking a picture with a small digital camera (with flash obviously) to get a better idea of what you're working with. It's not a technically difficult job, just a bit awkward to get to.

A ha! I was feeling in the wrong place, expecting the captive nuts to be in the inner wing, not the A post. Makes sense- I like the digital camera idea. Thanks for the swift reply.
 
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions on this thread, after a few hours with the spanners and heat gun yesterday afternoon, the O/S wing is now off my car with no extra damage! I managed to remove the plastic rain guard (one nut on the inner wing and one bolt going through a bracket- both 10mm head), Once removed , all three rear wing bolts were accessible to my 10mm socket and long extension!, reachable over and below the ABS pump. Took a bit of finding as all three bolt heads were buried in sealer.

Anyone know where I can get this overpaintable sealer from (wurth???)

Now the wing is off, I can take it to my college resto course and make up repair sections for the bottom section- rest of the wing is perfect! I'm going to gas weld them in and lead load the outside before painting.
