Has anyone replaced the steering shaft U'J's ? on their 944S2 ? is it an easy job and what is involved? do you have to buy the whole shaft with the U'J's or just the U/J's ? and how much is it and where can I buy the parts cheaply?

Sorry thats a lot of questions isn't it [8|]

The shaft is one of those fluctuating parts prices from an OPC, it's currently at the lower end of it's range [:)] around £60 from what I've heard on forums, give 'em a call on Monday

I had one fitted from GSF, 10k miles and 2 years later had a genuine one fitted to replace the GSF one that failed an mot.....[][]

they take a lot of punishment on our cars.
I have the sports shocks fitted to mine with 45 low profile tyres and live in an area of the South West where Councils do not maintain roads .Our village has pot holes so big and deep it throws your car 1 metre across the road when you forget to steer round them

Thats a job I have to do before the next MOT, there is a pinch bolt at top and bottom of the shaft.

*I think* looking at the manuals, that you would loosen the steering rack to get some clearance, then undo the pinch bolts and slide the shaft off the splines at each end.

I think the shafts fail because of proximity of joints to exhaust, dries out the grease in the UJ.

You also have to remove the heat shields under the car, but it's not too bad a job. Certainly made a huge difference to my steering - removed the binding sensation .

It is a simple job in principle but you also have to unbolt the steering rack. You don't have to remove the steering rack, just unbolt it so you can get the shaft off and on again.
