Anyone seen, heard of know about these "sports sounding exhausts?"

Does it work the in the same way? would there be any likely perfomance issues or ECU problems??

Nick

Please forgive my ignorance, but isn't this something that you could do yourself if you wanted, just by welding the additional pipe in place? or is there a bit more to it?

Ant.

Anyone speak German? http://www.oettle-autodienst.de/ is the website for the above.

Incidentally, a mate has a 2001Y (pre-facelift) C2 Cab with a factory fitted sports exhaust without the switch!! Is it different from the current switchable one? A little bird tells me they're probably made by Dansk and were the original PSE before the switchable system became available. Are these old systems still available (albeit with a Dansk badge instead of a Porsche one)? If so, does someone have a link as I'd rather go down this route than get a "cut and shut" from Ebay.

'Fraid not. My query was why Porsche would factory fit the switchable PSE system without the switch. Tony Wright seemed to think it was a Dansk system badged as Porsche original equipment rather than the switchable system. Any clues?

Out of interest, what do you have fitted to yours?

I think you will find that they were always switchable just depends if you wired up the solenoids to open and shut or not, as most people never use them in quite mode most did not bother. Most of the cost in fitting the PSE aftermarket is wiring in the switch.

Bog standard, I'm afraid, not that it worries me unduly. I don't like attracting more attention than necessary.

My brother has a C4 with factory fitted PSE, and there is no (driver controlled) switch on his.

Thanks for the info. I'm starting to think discretion is the better part of valour and will probably keep the standard exhaust.

All,

Just studied the photos of the OEM PSE and the "sports sounding system" being advertised... As far as I can see the only difference is the switch/solenoid. So i guess in theory they should sound exactly like a PSE that is always on? Anyone taken the chance to find out yet? I am tempted!

Cheers
Nick

I am very tempted too.
I'm thinking of sending about 30 emails out to Ebay members who have bought these exhausts and asking them some questions, like how does it sound (do you have any of your own sound files etc) , are there any annoying resonances, is it too loud on the motorway, is it quiet below 3000 or so, then get louder, is it reliable etc....

If anyone can translate any of that (or any other questions they think would be good to ask) into German, I would be happy to email the Ebay members and collate their replies, ready for translation into English?

So. What else is new.

OK, I emailed the company producing these in Germany... Very helpful chap but English was a little tricky.. Upshot is, can do not so loud, loud and louder to order.. Stainless steel fittings, and if I take one and don't like it he will take it back for the shipping costs... Sounds like a reasonable deal to me.. I thnk i am going to take a chance, I can't see how they are going to be much different from the PSE sound.. I think maybe the "not so loud" option might be better!? Anyone interested in getting one? I could try and get a discount! Cheers

Nick

Well done Nick. Just out of interest, do you know which 'Loudness' level the Wav file they have on their Ebay shop is? Sounds like it might be 'Not so loud'.....do you know if they have Wav files for each version....otherwise it's a bit of a game of chance......
I think I'll definately be getting one....although I'm a bit concerned at the bypass pipe's thinness, isn't that going to lead to some serious backpressure and loss of power?
I like Toolpants version, looks like its a manually switchable one!

Apparently they have sold over 120 units so far with no complaints. If u compare the bypass on these to the PSE it looks the same diameter! I have purchased one now on ebay and it will hopfully arrive by the weekend. I'll let you all know how it goes! I am getting the 29,6 bypass whatever that means (diameter i think) this is supposed to be best for all round sound vs too loud! the closest to PSE i am lead to believe and its the same as the one on the website!... The guy was really helpful!..he even suggested buying in Euros as it is cheaper for us both.. Should be around £220 delivered!!

Anyone know who could competently fit them in the Surrey area?

I e-mailed the last person to buy one of these for the 986S, this was his response.

Sounds very positive and I am interested.

Hi Mate,

I actually found out about this through a boxster forum on the internet - a fella on there was raving about it.

This is some of what he said...

After looking for 2 years on all possible boxster & porsche websites, i decided to take the plunge.

For 3 reasons:
-the price was very attractive EUR 350 + shipping all in roughly £260.
-The exhaust is standard porsche exhaust only modified the guys buy second hand items on ebay, modify them, then sell them.
-The technical solution bypass pipes is clever.

So the car remains standard. I hated the looks of shower OEM sport exhaust.

I got the exhaust fitted to my 2002 boxster S 3.2 manual yesterday.
Took the guy about 3 hours as some of the weldings were not perfect and he had to slightly modify them.
I also got the guys to polish the exhaust + pipes so it looks great from the rear.

THE RESULT IS OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!

The 1st essential moment was puting the key and starting the car: awesome!
What a change!

The sound is completely transformed: very deep and raw.
Very much like a 996 equiped with a factory exhaust.

Even the guys from the Porsche garage were impressed!
they usually deal with classic 911s...

I went for a drive and honnestly after reading much about sport exhausts was not expecting in performance increase....
If anything, i was even expecting to loose a bit of low down torque....

It is actually the exact opposite!!
I cannot believe it, it feels like someone had removed the handbrake!

I also got a bit scared that the noise in the cabin would change and get boomy at 3-4000rpm, but not at all.

The noise is very similar although a bit more aggressive across the rev range....

Bottom line: i spent about £400 between the exhaust and the fitting, and it feels like a new car.

I am over the moon!

Hope this helps...
