Anyone seen my old Cup Car?

Hi All

Long time since i've been on the forum - i remember posting a message saying i'd not be around for a couple of months due to kids arriving - that was 5 years ago..
looks like the humour still the same, and the same people all still around too..


anyhow - found some photos of my old (crashed) cup car the other day, and out of interest looked it up on the DVLA website to see if it was still around - but its not been taxed since 2004 - a year after I wrote it off. Just wondered if anyone knew where it went to as I'm sure the chap who bought it used to post on here

did not see the details of the chassis number - will have a little look and if i find it will check on the database - good call!

are you in a maritime blue car as well now..?
 
It did emerge "repaired" very poorly done on flea bay? The advert was misleading and for that he got the trial by Forum and the car seemed to disappear .... If a car is correctly honestly described then anyone is entitled to a fair audience .... [8|]
 
I think that the person who bought Matt's car is still on here. But given the general welcome he's been given i suspect getting a reply might prove difficult. Just my two penneth but one persons view of "restored" and another's can vary widely (i am not suggesting anyone is wrong here) because what's acceptable to one isn't to another. Honest ad's are another "difficult" category. There are ads that tell the whole truth within the ad and leave out the bits you won't want to hear or there are those that might bend the truth but there are very few "honest " ad's me thinks.They simply don't sell cars! Not wishing to start a war.
 
Yes I still come on here now and again! I still get email notifications so pop on here to have a look around when something looks interesting... Still seems to be the same people talking up RS prices, seems to be working!

I did get a frosty welcome back in the day, I think the guy selling it got a lot of stick and then that carried over to me when I bought it, but then I was young and foolish and generally wound lots of people up!

I bought it from a guy up north, he had it on EBay, I think I paid about £11K for it!

It had been repaired really poorly. It had 3.2 front wings and lights, steel bonnet and generally had been bashed about, it had probably been smashed up when it was raced and then again by Matt on the road!

After I blasted around in it for about 6 months it underwent a bare metal restoration, complete nut and bolt resto. Kelvin at Porsche Reading helped with some of the harder to find items up the front end, the ABS was shot and needed new parts and I got a pair of new 964 wings and had them rolled. They still did/do Ali bonnets so that was easy. Back in 2004/5 the factory still had quite a few NOS items from the 964 Cup programme, none of the parts were listed on their computers, it was all done off the original paper 964 Cup parts catalogue at Weissach. I doubt there's anything left now. Then one of the Porsche factory/warehouse burned down and it became really hard to even get things like new 964 rear light clusters and centre panel, I waited about 2 years for them! The earlier 70's and 80's parts were hit hardest as Porsche had to re-tool to produce the parts.

The chassis had to go on a jig and get straightened out, luckily the front end was only slightly out of shape. The front wings, front end and bonnet took most of the brunt. Cup shocks went off to Bilstein to be rebuilt and the rest of the suspension and brakes calipers etc were all mostly original, just needed stripping and rebuilding. Resto probably took about 6/7 years to complete.

It had a 993 fuel tank which got changed for an original NOS 964 item. New discs, pads etc were easy, I think the same as the 964 Turbo, obviously had all new fuel lines, brake lines which were a mess, and a set of correct 9.5 and 8 x 17 wheels (they still have these at the factory I think)

Engine and gearbox had a full rebuild, it was all matching numbers. Martin at 964 database has all the details, it's probably listed on his site somewhere. I think I may have sent him some photos near the end of the resto about 4/5 years ago.

It now sits in a collection, (I know how you all hate garage queens) but it's immaculate now and hasn't done any mileage since it was completed, but it does get to sit next to a 964 3.8 RSR and a 288 GTO.

No doubt I'll continue to drop in on the forum now and again and in 10 more years everyone will be wondering why they didn't buy more RS's when they were "˜only' £200,000"¦

glad to hear its still alive - and had the time and money spent on it - would be great if you could post up a couple of pics.
i still have some of the ones of it after i mildly dented it if you ever want copies as a before and after?

just a shame its not driven - mine almost turned into a garage queen now [:mad:] 800km last year and cannot remember the last trackday i went on...even got to the stage of seriously thinking about selling it on to someone who can afford to use it as it should be used [:(]

I have the photos when it was damaged, I think you sent them to me? Or it could have been Martin, I think you sent me the spare keys you had.

There were plenty of Cup Cars that had worse damage on the track and were back up and running for the next round!...

I must have sent the photos to you originally as I did not share them around publically from memory - although it was 10+ years ago
 
On this theme of "driving them as they were supposed to be," I have recently computed that of the 50 some RSRs produced, only about 20 raced. The others were bought for collecting. And of all of these, only a very few are still going out for fun!
