Anyone want to get rid of an old turntable?

Apparently all the cool kids are listening to vinyl these days..

My 14 year old son is looking for a turntable (can't think why, he could use mine, but I guess it's about having your own stuff..)

Thanks

Ed,

My Hi-Fi is all vintage-ie, Leak Stereo 30+ & have just acquired(ie given) a Leak Delta 70 amplifier from a good friend on here-David Bladon-which will match my Leak Delta tuner,Akai cassette deck, modern Cambridge CD player-cost more than the rest on its own & 2 pairs of Wharfedale speakers-1 set in each room.

My record deck is a Goldring Lenco GL75 transcription deck with elliptical diamond pickups-2 Goldring shells & needle-1 Ortofon shell & needle-this is mounted on a spring loaded base & I got this free from a building site so it replaced my original Goldring Lenco GL 69 CHASSIS mounted deck which used to fit on a cabinet I made in 1969.

(My wife bought me a vertical Hi-Fi cabinet so the other had to go,sadly)

So the point of this long winded post is to say the GL 69 (no quips please!) is available but would need a plinth & a cartridge shell-it has the standard plug in arm fixture-i still have all the technical stuff & spares can still be bought.

However you may want a ready to use item.

Thanks for the offer - I'll do a bit of research (Lenco a bit before my time - I've got a Townshend Rock...fantastic turntable..)

Ideally he's looking for something ready to use - presumably a plinth is optional anyway?

Mapling do a USB output turntable that provides an MP3 output, I believe it also has RGA outputs too which will plug straight into a normal amplifier....

Thanks Chris ...a bit against the spirit of the thing though and probably more than he can afford..

He's got a phono preamp already, so that's sorted

I see he has a phono pre amp sorted as I was going to say don't forget that modern amps no longer have the electronics to plug a deck in to. My local hi-fi specialist has several new decks for sale and I had a conversation with him at christmas and he told me it is young buyers that are driving the market. Who ever would have thought.

Lucky I kept my old amp and deck and recomissioned my vinyl collection last year. They even have a vinyl shop where I live plus get the travelling collectors shows. Some of the prices of old vinyl makes air cooled Porsches seem good value :- 0

I bought a couple of disco antistatic record cleaners last year - they really work well and bring old vinyl up as good as new (or better as they are completely static free).

My vinyl is certainly worth more than my Porsches[:D]

The Lenco decks came with Lenco cleaning/playing dispensers & I have always played my records, wet using a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol & distilled water-the Ortophon cartridge has a playing weight of 0.5 grm so get little static noise etc .
Recently bought a Milty Duopad & fluid to redo my collection.

Can get quite intoxicating even before hearing the music!

Usual place to look is ebay. I bet the most difficult thing to find will be a replacement stilus

Cheers,

Remarkably, that seems to be no problem at all. Interesting that some of the decks from the Pre-LP12 era have quite a following now.

I've just given my 35 year old Thorens TD160 a new stylus and thorough clean and oil.

The sound is gorgeous. I love the way it takes around a minute to crank up to 33rpm, the damping of the arm, and the tactile quality. So does my 10 year old son who bought his first vinyl with his HMV gift voucher (xmas pressy).

Buying the new stylus took some research as the original Shure can be obtained (at high cost) from Japan. But then found a guy in Blackpool who holds stock of high quality alternatives. It sounds fine.

The 'service' involved thorough and careful cleaning ariound the motor and lubricating by sparing application of sewing machine oil (nothing else will do, say the hifi forums!).

Somewhat staggered to see only one on eBay and priced at $1200. I paid £50 (second hand) for mine in 1985.

Almost as good value appreciation as my 993!

Thanks for that,Martin-had a call back from the place I last bought Goldring spares from -they had been on holiday-confirmed they still had many spares but they also cover Thorens & the other names in my previous post so details are for anyone interested:-

All sorted - thanks to the generosity of Peter Empson

not often seen on this forum any more - I think he's busy running http://www.decoaudio.com/ and his 944's still broken, so I'd encourage you all to buy stuff from him [:D]
