Anything to know before changing a battery?

Dizzies failed a month or so ago, and the battery got flattened a few times before it got sorted out, and now it sounds like the starter motor is labouring to start. As soon as it turns it catches, but it takes a second or so for the starter motor to get going. So that plus the colder weather makes me think it's new battery time.

I'm not that technically adept (had to look in the book to find the battery, assume dit was where it was on the old 3.2), so could someone please spell it out in short syllables what I need to do to change the battery?

I don't want to knacker anything up, the car's had enough spent on it this year. Last time I changed the battery on my missus's Nissan Micra I connected it up the wrong way and shorted out the loom...

Main thing to remember is to have the radio code handy.

Simple job, just don't connect the wrong way round this time!

I don't bother with the radio code, it's a pain for me to enter and it doesn't stop anyone nicking them - they can get it reset at any dodgy audio place. In fact it's a crap Alpine system, as long as they don't cause any damage I'd be quite grateful if they'd nick it and give me an excuse to buy a new one!
 
I've disconnected the battery a few times - nothing really bad happened. You have to remember to re-set the clock.
 
Done. I also found in the dolly wheel the toolkit which I assumed a previous owner had removed [:)]
The previous owner had also put the wrong battery in, a far smaller one, so that one probably wasn't that knackered but just never up to the job in the first place.
 
I'm sure when I changed my battery the alarm went off (factory fitted) and kept on going until the new battery was reconnected - maybe it thought the car was being stolen? I can't remember whether I tried blipping the alarm fob to stop it though. Perhaps don't try the change when people around you are asleep/early Sunday morning etc!
 
I don't have an alarm, just an immobiliser and a tracker, and I let the tracker people know before I had it done just in case.

The battery spec on a 993 is 85 Ah as I recall. Anything less won't be up to the job. Your average cheapo K**kfit battery is usually around 30 to 50 amps, depending on application.
 
I seem to recall from somewhere that when changing or disconnecting battery that when reconnecting you should let car idle for 10 mins to allow ecu to reset before driving off.

Anyone else heard of this?

I'm pretty sure this procedure is described in the manual.
