AOS problems....any knowledge?

I've been reading about AOS problems on other forums, got me a bit worried. Apparantly they tend to go at about 60k and can damage the engine through oil ingestion and consequent hydraulicing. It seems the part has been modified so I was wondering at what year the modified part was fitted. Is it a bit like a sophisticaed crankcase breather? Is it a DIY to replace it,

DIY

It's been changed a few times but I don't think you should worry about it - you'll know when it fails.

I have a first year 1997 and it was a horizontal design. I think 1999 was the first year for the vertical design. I am positive a 2000 has the vertical design.

It is a crankcase breather that separates air/oil and what is left is sucked into the intake and burned. Oil is returned to the crankcase. If it fails then oil gets sucked into the intake and you get clouds of smoke out of the exhaust.

This is the horizontal version you do not have.

Whats an AOS ?
Air Oil Separator is part of the pollution control equipment and is intended to reduce the pressure in the crankcase in an acceptable way by allowing some vapour to be vented into the engine for disposal through the normal combustion process.

I have a 2000MY Manual 2.7 with the vertical design. I wonder if that's because it's a non-S or the difference between the UK & US market?

Or did I get one from the old parts bin?!
