R5 News

The following new R5 members joined the Club during February**: Mark & Caroline Crook (Warrington "" 911T 2.0), Kevin Finn (Bolton "" 997C), Alan Baker (Cheadle Hulme), Richard & Catherine Linney (Penkridge "" Cayman), Stephen Frais (Alderley Edge "" 997C 4S) and David Eaton (Warrington "" Boxster S). Welcome to the Club and to the North West Region; your fellow R5 members and I look forward to meeting you at one of our forthcoming activities. If you cannot join us earlier, please make an effort to attend our annual New Members Night & BBQ in July. (**There were no new R5 members in March.)

The expanded R5 Committee, which will assume responsibility for running the Region on 1 May, has already met twice and is to meet again towards the end of this month. Their efforts to date have concentrated primarily on gaining an understanding of the diverse tasks running the Region entails and on determining which of them each Committee Member is best placed to take on, and the outcome of that exercise will be reported in the June edition of Porsche Post. In addition they have been taking stock of the organisational requirements of the Region's customary main events, starting with next month's display at the Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Rally (see below).

Next R5 Activity

The next R5 activity is our April Club Night, at the usual Deanwater Hotel venue, starting at 2000. (See FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS below for more information.)

R5 Newsletters

This is the penultimate Newsletter that I will issue. Although I will by then have retired from the role of Regional Organiser (RO), for practical reasons I will compile and issue the May Newsletter. Thereafter they will issue from the R5 Committee.

Help with R5 Activities

The Region always needs inputs from its members; be it just an idea for a Club Night or an outing, help with one of the aforesaid main events, or an offer to organise an activity. Rarely in my time as RO has sufficient help been forthcoming and all too often the familiar, few stalwarts who do volunteer end up doing far more than a fair share! That should not be the case. Even though, in common with the Club as a whole, R5's membership is down by about 200 from the 750 of mid-2008, it would need only a small proportion of those members to volunteer once every few years to make the running of the Region's activities a pleasure for everyone.

Car for Sale

I have been alerted to what, from its pictures, looks like a very nice 1982 911SC in White Gold, which is reported to have been "maintained to a high standard" and is being offered at £8750.00 ono. Please contact me if you are interested, and I will put you in touch with the vendor. (I'm tempted myself!)

FORTHCOMING R5 EVENTS

11 April: Club Night

This meeting will feature a presentation on, and demonstration of car detailing techniques by the Cheshire-based representative of Club sponsor Sportscar Protection, Matthew Smith, and the firm's Principal, David Bowerman. "Detailing", as it has come to be known, is a complex procedure, involving a number different techniques and a range of specialist equipment and materials, and this is your opportunity to learn all about it from some its most experienced practitioners. For anybody who struggles to make the formal 2000 Club Night start time, please note Matt & David's presentation will commence at 2030.

22 April: Summer Sunday

Our first Summer Sunday outing of 2012 will be to the North Wales Region (R6)'s "Porsches on the Prom 2012" event at Llandudno. The promenade at Llandudno provides a fabulous setting for car displays, and last year's inaugural event attracted 50-odd cars on a day blessed by glorious spring weather. This year's event starts at 1100, and the R6 organising team are hoping for similar weather and double the number of participants.

Rendezvous at 1000 at the Kimmel Park Services (between Jcns 25 & 24A) on the A55, ready to depart at 1030 in a convoy for the final 15 miles to the event venue. Alternatively, make your own way to arrive at 1100.

7 May: Gawsworth Hall Classic Car Rally

R5 will mount its customary display at this very popular event at the picturesque Tudor home of Tim Richards & his family, just off the A536 between Macclesfield and Congleton. The event opens to the public at 1030, but display cars (entry fee £3.50, at the gate) are afforded access from 0930. Follow the "Porsche" signs to our display area, which will as usual be on the Top Field (together with the trade stalls), and then park as directed. This year we will have our much larger, new marquee, so don't let inclement weather deter you from attending. Complimentary tea/coffee will be available throughout the morning, but you will need to bring your own chairs & tables. (Members of neighbouring Regions are also invited.)

As I am sure will not escape you, the tea and coffee have to be made and the marquee doesn't erect itself! Hence, help is needed both on the afternoon prior to the event - to put up the marquee - and on the day itself, to prepare & serve the drinks.

OTHER CLUB ACTIVITIES

Please note this information is provided solely to alert you to other Porsche events at venues not too far from home that you may wish to attend. It does not mean any formal R5 presence is planned.

5/6 May: Donington Historic Festival

See February or March Porsche Post for details, including two-for-one advance purchase ticket offer.
