PCGB Region 13 Hereford, Worcester & Shropshire
April 2010 at The Bowling Green Inn.
Back at our usual Meet, when we arrived there was already a good selection of well turned out Porsches. More turned up shortly after, including a Mercedes Club Member who had chosen the wrong night !
A good congenial crowd. I was pleased to see Geoff Lane and Caroline, who have been members for some time but ruled as many of us are, by work times. They don't live far away, so we hope to see them again soon. It was also nice to see Eric Humphries out and about again, always in the past, a reliable regular.
David and Marcia Hartley were back from their antipodean travels and among the other regulars were David and Angela Barnes.
But, that is history, so if you could not get there, you can't go now. So let's talk about some meetings you can get to.
Last year, several of us enjoyed a pleasant afternoon on the River Wye at Wyedean, Symonds Yat. Paul Howells, our GT3 Register Secretary, runs a proficient canoeing operation there, as well as his super collection of racing Porsches, which many of you have seen in the past.
We are proposing to repeat that, this year, on Sunday the 20th June. I need to confirm numbers to Paul on the 3rd June, if you want to join us, give me a ring by then. The charge was £25 per canoe with usually two persons although a third could be carried if necessary. They are Canadian type canoes, made of aluminium, which the metallurgists of you will know, work hardens. So when you have been sitting on the seats for some time, well, bring a cushion.
We start off about midday so be there earlier for coffee and a briefing. The trip including a half way break, lasts about four hours for a gentle paddle downstream. We shall be taken up stream in a mini-bus with the canoes, briefed and left to our own devices. The water is quite shallow and the trip generally quite safe. But you are advised to bring a change of clothing. We had one soaking last year as one crew member stepped on the side of the canoe when getting out, at the finish. Always put you weight in the centre of the craft !
The following weekend, Sunday the 27th June, we are once again invited by Herefordshire Aero Club to their open day weekend. And I have agreed to go on the Sunday. They would like us to be there around 9am if possible, to arrive before the crowds. Always, they reserve a front compound for us, right by the peri-track and the event has always attracted many Porsches to the gathering, so please come along. It would be nice to know you are coming, but there is no charge. After all, they are a Club in our Region.
There is a good canteen/restaurant and usually a barbeque with a bar serving drinks as appropriate to the time. Many displays, mainly Air minded, a large assortment of aircraft, some not seen very often. You can have a flight in some of the Club aircraft or just rest and chat.
That brings us to our meeting on Tuesday the 29th June, which is moved for this one night, from the Bowling Green, to the Pear Tree Inn at Smite. For a geographical location, if you come off the M5 at junction 6 and take the Droitwich exit, down to the Worcester Rugby Club, turn right at the island and the Pear Tree is about a mile or so up the hill, use the first entry and it will take you up to the large car park at the back. Find that on the map and you can work out your own routes. For those who can't read a map, the post code is WR3 8SY.
Ever since I took over the Region, in 2002, we have traditionally had a Show Night. This has increased in popularity, partly due to the participation of our own Will Gough, who has enticed many of his friends to bring their own special cars. We have made use of the adjacent field, which has been a problem for the low slung. This year we are moving the event to Smite and are hoping to accommodate many classic and vintage cars with perhaps, Ferrari and Lamborginie Clubs.
This looks to be a great event, we are promised, a garden bar, pig roast and live music, commencing from 6.30pm. The entry is free but Will runs a charity called the Noah's Ark Trust, for bereaved children so donations throughout the evening will be appreciated.
Don't miss this, but please pre-register by giving Will a ring on 07962 159938 or 01299 851635, so we can advise the Pear Tree about numbers to be catered for.
There are many other Club events which are well publicised so watch for these too. However, as far as our Region is concerned, as Nelson said at Trafalgar, "R13, expects this month, that every man shall do his duty". Sorry about the corruption.
Forthcoming Events.
Read the above and be thrilled !
