Is aquaplaning that common when driving a 996?

Compared to your old Corsa : Probably Yes
Compared to any other car on similar width tyres : Probably No

Aquaplaning is a function of several factors. In a rough order :-
Water Depth - Shallower is better - less for the tyre to cut through.
Tyre Width -  Narrow is better - Wider tryes skim over, narrower cut through.
Speed - Lower is better - Lower allows the tyres to disperse the water.
Tread Depth - Deeper is better - More tread will also allow the tyre to disperse the water.
Tyre Pressue - Not to low - Low pressue will cause the tyre to dip in the middle allowing water under it.
Vehicle Weight - Higher can help - More weight will keep the tyre in contact with the road.

So the simple rules to avoid aquaplaning when driving any car
Avoid deep standing water
Slow down
Don't let your tires get too worn down
Keep an eye on your tyre pressures
