ARB's and ride hieght

I had a set of M030 ARB's fitted to my S2 a couple of weeks ago as part of my striping out and track preping. I noticed the other day that the car now looks like its riding a bit higher than it did before.
Can the ARB's effect the ride hieght or am I seeing things?

This is speculation:-

ARBs work against the opposite wheel and so can't lift or drop the car unless the ARB's are too tight in their mountings and not allowing the car to settle again.

Alternatively, if one side of the car was significantly lower than the other they may help to re-level the car making the previously low side a little higher.

The cars back in the garage at the end of the week for its cage so I'll get them to check it out then... Its turned into one of those nigglying things now the more i look at it the higher it looks... I'll be reaching for th step ladders to get in to it by the weekend!

I think there are two factors going on here:

1. The ARB's, particularly the rear, may have been installed in a way that there is pre-load on them. Ideally, they would want to be tightened down while the car is down on its tyres, ala being on a rack. Pre-load in the rear ARB's may cause a *slight* amount of added height in the rear. Not much, but............

2. Less weight. If you have been taking weight out of the car, its going to start to gain ride height. I went thru this awhile back when I started my weight reduction program on the car. Over one weekend, the car gained almost 1/2" in rear ride height. This is why I waited until the majority of my reduction was done before I finished making my final suspension adjustments and final alignment.

Hope that helps!

Tifosiman...

I see your car has had the rear torsions re-indexed....
Did you do it or a garage do it????

whoever did it ...how much did they drop the rear by??
+ what are you ride heights now??? They look low.....

I want to set up my S2 with new coil overs + need the torsions indexing....but need to know by how much..?????

Im presuming that the coil overs have got preload on the springs.???
Ie the back was droped + then brought back up with the rear coil overs..????

Hey Dave,

Yes, my car is quite a bit lower than stock. The t-bars have been re-indexed, somewhere in the range of 6-7 clicks, then the coil-overs installed and adjusted so that they work in conjunction with the t-bars, no clanging about on the spring perches whatso-ever. The eccentric on the swing arm was set in the middle state so that there is approx 3/8" adjustment either direction to aid in corner-balancing (in addition to what you can do with the spring perches on the coil-overs).

I don't have a measurement of the height at the fender lips handy here, it has been awhile since the work was done and my memory is slipping in my old age[:eek:], but I could get it for you over the weekend if you would like.

Cheers......[:D]

I will get you the heights from the center of the wheel to the fender lip at the 12 o'clock position.

As far as the # of clicks, I don't know for certain. I was under a time constraint with an upcoming event and dropped it off at my shop to have the work done. They had it done in two days including the corner balance and alignment. Well worth the money for me, as time was very short. Sorry!~

Can you do it with 17" rims fitted or is that too much hassel.???
As ive got 17" cup2,s fitted to mine....

Also can you get me the fronts also....

Ta.. a BIG help....

Dave,

I just got home from the office, uncovered the car from its winter cover/cocoon, and measured for you. I measured from wheel center to fender lips at the 12 o'clock position, so that the size of the wheel does not affect the measurements (that is the accepted way of checking height, at least in the circles that I run in). I have 17's but they would not affect this measurement.

Front= 31.0cm
Rear= 31.2cm

This was done on the drivers side only. I am fairly certain the passenger side is about .1cm <EDIT> LOWER (sorry) on the rear, and about the same on the front.

Hope that helps!

Jeremy
