Arch liners

Well it's done, bought the 944 I was looking at. Picking it up Tuesday/Wednesday when the water pump and belts have been done. Noticed that there are no arch liners in the rear arches and wondered where the best place to get some might be?

Also, the panel gap between the rear wings and bumper seems a tad large. It's equal on both sides, I guess this is consistent with the arch repair that the car has had in the past though. Anyone got any ideas on the easiest way to realign the bumper?

Don't think the rear arches have any liners. The bumper does have a bit of a gap anyway - i've always supposed it is to allow for a bit of movement if you slowly back into a wall or something.
 
Must admit that it did cross my mind that the rear arches might not have liners after all. The rest of the bumper seems a perfect fit so i'm probably just being overly paranoid that I'm missing something. It does seem that I have bought a completely straight car but my natural suspicion is alwAys there.
 
Arch liners were added to the front arces for the 1986 model year. The rears dont have a liner.
 
That's what I was hoping to hear. I read the classic car magazine article on the 944 today and it said to check for arch liners but didn't say whether they were front or back so I was just worrying unnecessarily.

As the car is at a friend's garage I was able to wash the car and detail the interior today. Will probably replace the interior floor mats but there is even a fitted overmat for the boot floor! Can't wait to get my hands on it properly and give it a full de-swirl machine polish.

'Detail'? Am I the only person who hates this unthinking adoption of dumb American terms? The first person to call an exhaust manifold a 'header' gets hit with my new torque wrench. [;)]

I would have agreed with you in the past until I started detailing. I now grudgingly accept the term as what I do goes far beyond the perception of giving a car a wash or valet. It really is all to do with the details!

Arch liners are a saviour and a curse both at the same time. They protect the bottom of the footwell from rusting through to some degree due to stone chips but they trap moisture and dirt behind them which causes the same rust problems anyways. When we took the 2 of my S2 both of them broken in at least one place, my S2 had some rust up around the top of the arches by the scuttle panel caused by this moisture trapping. The race cars don't run with them and tbh maybe only part of one to protect the ABS pump may be a good idea. Best solution IMHO is not to have any of this rubbish on the car and instead keep it clean and refresh any stonechip / underseal on a regular basis.

Basically all the things Porsche did to improve the series 2 cars only resulted in something that seems to rust just as much but in different ways.
