Are Porsche Brembo Calipers Similar to Others?

As title really: are the Brembo calipers used on Porsches similar to calipers used in other applications (minus the script; obviously)? I am aware that Brembo will use a common design as much as possible and Im familiar with some completely similar cross-manufacturer models as well as some others which are similar, other than the mounting...

I was looking at a Ferrari 355 at the Silverstone Classic and the black brembos fitted were identical to those fitted to my 944S2 apart from the word "Ferrari" of course [:D]

I've read that Brembo make Porsche calipers under licence to Porsches specifications so i'd say no. They may look the same as they may share the same casting dies as other calipers used on other cars, but like everything Porsche it is attention to detail that makes the difference.

I'm no brake expert, but you'd have to be pretty daft as a manufacturer not to use the same basic block across a number of different manufacturers...... production costs being so high.

Ref. your S2, having previously owned one myself I know that the front are rear calipers are identical with the exception of the piston diameters. There are a number of different versions of the Brembo Four pot caliper, with or without porsche enamelled script or as on my Turbo S2 with Raise scripting.

:)

I agree, the pad design is used across several cars including Ferrari but as Scott says you just get that feeling there will be some slight unique to Porsche specifications in the calipers. I have often wondered for example about the Brembo's fitted on cars like the Seat Cupra. They are bigger and probably loads cheaper then ours.

Simon ISTR Kevin Eacock has some sort of Brembo clone or similar based brake packages he has been working on. My brother told me about these, they are much cheaper then Porsche Brembo's.

Does that mean a cheap Seat equivalent of the infamously expensive stainless steel plates?

I will ask him when I have the opportunity Neil. I wasnt asking about 951/964 caliper particularly, although these are the cheapest and the most plentiful, so I suppose that theyre far more likely to be coomon to another vehicle than S4 calipers or larger...

4 pot calipers are becoming more common on modern cars but if you look at them more closely they all are of a 2 piece design - the same basic design Porsche were using 20yrs ago. Modern Porsches Brembo calipers are a single piece casting - you don't see that on any other car - even the likes of your Ferrari's and Lambo's - if Brembo are making these for Porsche then why are they not making them for the other manufacturer? Answer is because they can't as it is a Porshce design, Porsche copyright and intellectual property and Porsche are just using Brembo as a manufacturere rather than going to Brembo and buying an off the shelf Brembo product.

This sort of thing goes on all the time. The balance shaft design on our engines is actually a Mitsubishi invention and Porsche used it under License.

The balance shaft concept was invented by Lancaster but his design was to have the crank and balance shafts at the same level , Mitsubishi however improved on Lancasters design by staggering the crank/balance shafts thus cancelling the gas forces that occur apon ignition thrusting the pistons sideways against the bore. Running the two shafts at diferent levels produces a counteracting torque. AT the time of introduction the 944 had one of the smoothest engines in the world, smoother than a V8 and pretty close to a straight 6. For those who don't know a straight 6 is the smoothest setup you can have for an engine..

It's many years ago since I read all this but I'm sure I can find the info from the roadtests i have if needed. The 944 is a far superior car than many know including owners .....[:)][:)]

Would be great wouldn't it. Some have already fitted the Seat Cupra front air dam/valence onto their 968's. Surprisingly it looks a rather good fit.
