Are there any fellow Tiptronic owners in the Southampton area?

I cant make up my mind if my Tip is behaving as it should, I had a Tip service recently on the suggestion of my local Indie ( now a few £££ lighter) but it seems the same.

Nearly all changes up the gears are smooth but some down changes are a bit rougher especially 3rd to 2nd when coming to a stop quickly, probably 1 in 3. My previous 964 was a bit off sometimes but Ive no comparison in my 996 Targa.

I may be being a bit picky and paranoid and expecting it to be as smooth as my previous A6 3.0 tdi quattro, so to prove a point, does anyone live roundabout Southampton that fancies comparing notes sometime?

id rather compare before I set off down a more expemsive diagnosis route...

Hi there
I'm not in Southampton area to help you out but my Tiptronic is smooth both up and down. I can't say I even notice the down change when stopping.

Hi
Sorry not in your area but I can confirm my tiptronic is smooth up and down. Perhaps the oil change has dislodged some gunge in the box that had been sitting out of the way somewhere. I was warned about this possibility when I talked to my local Indie about changing the transmission oil. Unless it seems to be getting worse I would be inclined to just use it and hope it will all settle down again after a bit of use.

Hi there, C2 Tip myself, I'm a tad north in Reading area, but if you fancy a run up the A34 sometime to compare notes, there's a few good test roads (and pubs) around Newbury.

Hi, I have a C2 Cab Tip and I have the same clunking downshift from 3rd to 2nd, like you but not every time but probably 1 in 5 are lumpy. Car has done 68k miles...

Julius....I'll take up that offer, I go to TVP in reading often as Ive a work office there...I'll pm you

Dave...sounds like mine..do you know why it happens?

You have to bear in mind that there are two Tiptronic boxes if you want to compare like-for-like. Jules has the ZF box in his 3.4, and you have the Mercedes box in your 3.6.

I notice a slight clunk now and again 3rd to 2nd - usually when in Drive mode (not manual) and during sharper braking when approaching a junction - I've got used to it. I don't think it happens in Manual mode.

I'm not sure (I'd like to think so...) - I make it smoother by "telling" the car we are coming to a junction - smoother braking.
I try to drive in manual mode as much as possible - I've read that low revs and acceleration is not good for the engine*... this seems to help the clunk from 3rd to 2nd when stopping (which you do not need to do manually even in manual mode - as the car automatically selects 2nd).
Hope this makes sense.
*Also fitted LTT and running on millers oil

I am just along the coast at Worthing and have a 2003 Targa... Mine has done 70K miles and I had the internal gearbox filter changed along with the oil last year ahead of the 90K schedule and couldn't believe the difference in the gearbox changes...Cost was about £200 at Revolution Porsche up in Yorkshire...

Thanks to Jules, we met today to compare. No real conclusion but it doesn't seem anything untoward.

And I went for quick hoon in Jules' 3.4..

thanks Jules

Mike

thanks for the info, maybe we can catch up some time and compare

i had a Tiptronic service at Jon Mitchel in Ferndown last month, no real difference. They suggested the Tip service but I'm not sure they had a test run beforehand as it didn't cure the clunk and they didn't call that out when I picked the car up. I had to take it back again for another look, no real resolution.

Went out with Jules today, and obviously there were no real clunks...sods law
