Are there many problems with 3.4??

I'm going to look at a 56 plate 3.4 boxster and I was wondering if these engine where any better than the 3.2's as they are newer..

The car is a one owner and has been serviced by Porsche reading and then by specialists it has done about 70k.

I'm assuming at that age it's not the DFi engine, which so far has been reliable.

However, at 70k miles I'd have thought any issues would have happened already.

Hi Colin, I'd imagine the 3.4 block has some improvements over the 3.2 but the same rules will still apply in terms of IMS, RMS etc. The mileage shows the car has been used which is always a good thing in my book especially where the IMS bearing is concerned. I've just had a new clutch in my 118k 986 S and had the IMS/RMS (and some other draft-shaft work done as the gearbox was out). The replaced IMS was in good condition.

Along with the usual checks I would just check the heaviness of the clutch (if manual) as a replacement is expensive (but does allow other work to be also done). BTW - Porsche Reading do a 7+ year scheme for Boxsters giving 10% off parts and labour and other little benefits like a free MOT.

Cheers,
Simon

I ve had a quick look at the car, it's was pouring with rain so I couldnt do a full inspection, I noted the following

It needs to rears soon 18"

I would say that it needs pads and disc all around ( it must do it's not had any in 70k !!!!! )
In the last two mots it may note of a small amount of play I the steering arms.

It got a full history with reading then jzm ( it needs a service and mot in October )

What do people think the jobs above will cost?

The guy is only selling it as today he has taken delivery a a new white boxster s.

Disks/pads all round - I can tell you this on Monday as I'm expecting a quote from Reading. I'd expect around £400-500 mark would be close.

play in steering arm - I've got the same - about £450 (need to drop the steering rack) and do a geo. Quoted to me including 10% discount on parts/labour.

Tyres - max £500 for two rears?

Clutch heavy?

Also just to add that if there's only a small amount of play in the steering it shouldn't be an MOT failure. Mine had an advisory last year and it hasn't got any worse. Unless I really feel a lack of bite to the turn or find irregular tyre wear I won't be replacing for now. The play in mine is very tiny.

Looking at brake kits on design911, there are packages that range in price dependant on what kind of driving you do. Still approx £450-550 range.

£500 for pads/discs all round from an OPC? If that includes labour bite their arm off. Cost me £1,300 after club discount in 2011.

Were they gold plated?

OEM replacement packages on Design911 come around the price I've quoted, that seems extremely steep in my opinion.

No, but it did include labour and a Porsche branded jar of Vaseline when they gave me the bill [:D]

haha! That'll be why then [:)] Looking back at my approx pricing I was looking at OEQ not Porsche standard replacements.

The JZM quote seems crazy, £1300? The Porsche "standard" replacement disks on Design911 come to £581 front and rear. These don't include pads but the Brembo high performance pads are an additional £220. You can buy the packages which come in more reasonable but of course needs labour. My Porsche specialist charges £58+VAT an hour so JZM's must be quite high I'm assuming?
